The trade-off is a potentially long outdoor wait, controlled access and no easy way to leave and reclaim your place. The Times Square Alliance’s published guidance gives a broad viewing corridor and current planning times, but it contains mixed-year details; check final instructions for December 31, 2026, before setting out.
Where is the best place to watch the Ball Drop in Times Square?
The Ball descends from a flagpole atop One Times Square. The Times Square Alliance identifies Broadway between 43rd and 50th Streets and Seventh Avenue north to 59th Street as the broadest strong viewing area. That is a long corridor, not a single reserved viewing platform. The “Bowtie,” where Broadway and Seventh Avenue meet, is the sound-system hub; screens extend the event beyond it. Your view will depend on where you are admitted and the sightline from that spot.
Approach from the side of the corridor that makes sense for your destination: the Alliance advises using Sixth Avenue for areas east of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, and Eighth Avenue for areas west. Follow police direction and current posted instructions; crossings through the affected area may be restricted.
Do you need tickets to see the Ball Drop?
No ticket is required for the outdoor public viewing areas, and the Alliance says those spaces are not sold. Entry is first-come, first-served, so free admission does not guarantee a spot. A ticket to a hotel or restaurant party is separate: it covers the named venue under that venue’s terms and does not guarantee entry to a public viewing pen. Check whether a specific party actually includes a Ball view rather than assuming it does. The Alliance also cautions that multi-venue or “all access” passes may not get holders through police checkpoints into a public viewing area.

What time should you get there?
The Alliance FAQ currently says the celebration begins shortly before 6 p.m., the Ball is raised at about 6 p.m., and viewing areas open at 3 p.m. It says the descent begins at exactly 11:59 p.m. and lasts 60 seconds. These are published planning details, not a guarantee that the same schedule or access arrangements will apply on December 31, 2026. Recheck the FAQ close to the event.
Arrive early if you want to try for a public pen, but no arrival time guarantees admission. The pens fill at different rates depending on the year’s attendance pattern and weather. Be prepared for a long wait outside: dress for cold conditions and bring only items permitted under the final NYPD instructions.

How do you get into the viewing areas?
The Alliance’s current FAQ lists access points at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets, approached from Sixth or Eighth Avenue. Because the page contains references to different event years, treat these as provisional for the 2026–27 celebration and verify the final entry map and police directions before you travel.
Use public transportation rather than planning to drive into the event area. The Alliance recommends transit and describes street closures, restricted crossings and controlled pedestrian movement. Subway service and station access can change for the holiday, so consult the MTA’s eventual holiday notices and official city announcements instead of relying on a prior year’s schedule. For event, weather, road-closure and traffic alerts, the Alliance FAQ lists Notify NYC; confirm its current instructions on the official page before using the text service.

Can you leave Times Square and come back?
Do not count on it. The Alliance says that leaving a viewing area to dine means you cannot return to the same spot. There are no portable public restrooms and no licensed food or beverage vendors in the event area. Eat beforehand and use restroom facilities before joining a pen; once inside, plan to stay put.
