New Zealand’s Lord of the Rings filming locations span both islands, so visiting them is a multi-region trip, not a single-day circuit. Start with Hobbiton near Matamata: it is the standout built film set still open to visitors. At most other locations, the production sets were removed and the appeal is the landscape itself.
Tourism New Zealand lists more than 150 locations used for the films, but that does not mean there are 150 preserved sets to explore. Tolkien New Zealand says nearly all other film sets were removed after filming and the sites returned to their natural state. These are real filming places associated with scenes—not literal locations from Tolkien’s fictional map.
Access varies: a central-city walk or short track is very different from private farmland or a remote road. Check current access rules, weather, road conditions and tour availability before setting out; any location coordinates offered by the Department of Conservation are guidelines based on staff estimates and Ian Brodie’s guide, not guarantees of access.
North Island: the Shire, Mordor and Wellington
1. Hobbiton Movie Set, near Matamata
Hobbiton is the enduring, built attraction on this list: the Shire setting in Waikato, on private farmland. The operator says visits are available only through a fully guided tour, and bookings are essential; it recommends booking early. The Signature Tour page describes an approximately 2.5-hour visit, including a bus ride, about 1.5 hours walking with a guide, and a stop at the Green Dragon Inn with a complimentary beverage. The page currently displays NZ$130 for adults and NZ$65 for youth; prices can change, so check the official Signature Tour page for current details and booking.

3. Mount Victoria, Wellington

The striking pinnacles provided the landscape for the Paths of the Dead. This is a natural-area visit rather than a preserved film installation; check current access and conditions before choosing a route.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to plan a filming-location trip
- Choose a region rather than trying to see everything at once. The ten stops span Waikato, Ruapehu, Wellington, Wairarapa, Nelson Tasman, Canterbury, Mackenzie Country, Queenstown and Fiordland across both islands.
- Separate guided access from public landscape visits. Hobbiton requires a booked guided tour; Pelennor Fields is on private land and the tourism board points visitors to a tour option. Do not assume a film location is open simply because it can be identified on a map.
- Check the practical details close to travel. Confirm tour availability, park and track access, road conditions, weather, and any local restrictions. Conditions and visitor arrangements can change.
- Use location guides as planning aids, not access permissions. DOC notes that its coordinates are guidelines based on staff estimates and Ian Brodie’s guide. DOC also names The New Zealand Road Spiral Atlas as featuring filming locations; check current editions and availability if using printed references.
Other Tolkien-related stops
Wētā Workshop in Wellington and Auckland offers an experience focused on film craft, costumes, props and sets, rather than a natural filming location. Check the current venue, tour and event details before planning a visit.
