Indian filmmaker Kumar Shahani, a major figure in the New Wave and parallel cinema movements, died in Kolkata on February 24, 2024, aged 83. Actor and collaborator Mita Vashisht confirmed his death to India Today; the outlet reported that he had experienced age-related health issues.
Who was Kumar Shahani?
Shahani was an Indian filmmaker, teacher and writer whose work helped shape the country’s New Wave and parallel cinema. He was born on December 7, 1940, in Larkana, Sindh, then part of British India and now in Pakistan. His family moved to Bombay after Partition, according to FIPRESCI-India’s February 2024 newsletter.
He studied at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune under filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, then continued his studies at IDHEC in France and assisted director Robert Bresson. Both Ghatak and Bresson were important influences on his work, as The Indian Express reported.
Which films define his career?
Shahani’s films include Maya Darpan (1972), Tarang (1984), Khayal Gatha (1989) and Kasba (1990), according to FIPRESCI-India. Maya Darpan won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, according to The Times of India.

His last major released film was Birah Bharyo Ghar Aangan Kone, also known as The Bamboo Flute (2000). The Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation described it as a work that brings together dance, sculpture, classical performance and tribal music. Its 2024 legacy program screened the film as part of an effort to engage with his work.
What did Shahani contribute beyond filmmaking?
Shahani also taught and wrote about cinema. His book The Shock of Desire and Other Essays, published in 2015, collects 51 essays, FIPRESCI-India reports. The Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation describes an archive of his films, writings, notes and recordings of talks and conversations. Scholars, curators and historians continue to study the breadth of this material.

Vashisht, who confirmed Shahani’s death, said: “I admired him as a human being and as a filmmaker. He was one of the greatest directors in our country. His integrity and consciousness towards society, art, cinema, was unparallel. His films were inspiring.”
