Reports said Michelle and Barack Obama marked the occasion with Instagram tributes and throwback photographs; one described Barack’s image as showing a young Malia holding his hand.
What the Obamas shared for Malia’s 2024 birthday
Yahoo Entertainment reported on July 4, 2024, that Malia’s birthday fell on the Fourth of July and that her parents shared birthday tributes with throwback photos. Its excerpt specifically described Barack Obama’s photo as showing young Malia holding his hand. The report does not establish the exact wording of either parent’s 2024 caption or describe Michelle’s image in detail, so those details cannot be stated here.

What Michelle and Barack wrote in 2022
A separate ABC News report covers Malia’s 24th birthday on July 4, 2022—not the 2024 celebration. ABC reported that Michelle shared a baby photo and wrote: “Happy birthday, Malia,” then praised her daughter’s “wonderful spirit” and called her a “beautiful, caring, and driven young woman.” Michelle ended, “I love you so, so much! Love, your Mommy.”

ABC also reported that Barack posted a throwback photo and wrote: “Happy Birthday, Malia! No matter how sophisticated, accomplished, beautiful, and gracious a young woman you’ve become — you’ll always be my baby,” followed by, “And I will always be here to lift you up.” These are the captions as ABC News reported them in 2022; they should not be read as the wording of the 2024 posts.

The archived White House biography identifies Michelle Obama as the mother of Malia and Sasha. The page is explicitly frozen historical material and is useful here only for that background.
