Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William reportedly sent a private condolence letter to Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway after her husband, Derek Draper, died in January 2024. Garraway later confirmed receiving it but did not disclose what it said. The report came while Catherine was recovering from planned abdominal surgery; it was not a new health update.
Who received the letter?
The recipient was Kate Garraway, a presenter on the British television programme Good Morning Britain. The letter was reportedly sent by Catherine and Prince William after Garraway’s husband, Derek Draper, died in January 2024. Draper had endured a long illness following complications associated with COVID-19. The List reported the story on 8 February 2024.
What did Garraway say about it?
Garraway acknowledged the message on Good Morning Britain, saying, as reported by The List: “Catherine and William sent a beautiful letter, and I know Catherine has been in hospital herself, so I really appreciated that.” She said the couple had asked her to keep the message private.
The letter’s text was not made public. Garraway did not quote it, and the available report does not establish its precise delivery date or provide further personal details. Its wording should therefore not be inferred from her brief description.

How did the letter relate to Catherine’s surgery?
Kensington Palace announced on 17 January 2024 that Catherine had undergone planned abdominal surgery the previous day. The palace said the operation was successful, that she was expected to remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, and that recovery would continue at home. That range was the palace’s expectation at the time, not confirmation of her actual hospital stay. Read Kensington Palace’s 17 January 2024 statement.
The palace did not identify the underlying condition. Its statement said: “Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.” The letter report described the timing of Garraway’s disclosure in relation to Catherine’s recovery; it did not give a precise date for when the letter was sent or delivered.
