Trump had criticized ABC for reinstating Kimmel and threatened legal action. Kimmel’s sharpest reply was that Trump was trying to deny threatening the network by threatening it.
What Trump said about Kimmel’s return
Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday, September 23, before Kimmel’s return episode aired. He said he could not believe ABC had given Kimmel his job back, claimed the White House had been told the show was cancelled, described ABC as being in jeopardy, and suggested a lawsuit could be lucrative. The Associated Press reported the post as part of the sequence surrounding Kimmel’s reinstatement (Associated Press).
Kimmel’s Wednesday response, line by line
Kimmel began by reading Trump’s complaint: “I can’t believe ABC fake news gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back.” He answered: “You can’t believe they gave me my job back? I can’t believe we gave you your job back!”
When he reached Trump’s warning that the show put ABC “in jeopardy” and the prospect of a lucrative lawsuit, Kimmel replied: “Only Donald Trump would try to prove he wasn’t threatening ABC by threatening ABC.”

He then characterized Trump as a bully and argued that giving in would invite more demands. Mediaite reported Kimmel’s comparison: “Donald Trump is an old-fashioned ’80s movie style bully, taking your lunch money — and if you give it to him once, he’ll take it again.” These are excerpts from the monologue, not a complete verified transcript; the wording beyond these reported lines should not be attributed to Kimmel without checking the episode itself (Mediaite).
Why this was his second monologue after returning
ABC suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 17, 2025, after backlash to Kimmel’s remarks following the September 10 killing of Charlie Kirk. The suspension came amid public comments by FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and decisions by major ABC affiliate owners Nexstar and Sinclair to preempt the show. Disney later announced that the program would return after conversations with Kimmel; he was back on air Tuesday, September 23, after six days off.

That Tuesday return monologue addressed the original controversy and free expression. Kimmel said he had not intended to make light of Kirk’s murder or blame a specific group for the alleged killer’s actions. CNN’s September 24 transcript of that return includes Kimmel saying, “it was never my intention to make light of the murder a young man,” and describing an Instagram message sent on the day of the killing as expressing love for Kirk’s family and asking for compassion. CNN labels the transcript a rush transcript, so it should not be treated as a definitive record of punctuation or wording (CNN transcript).
On Wednesday, Kimmel’s focus shifted from his own remarks and the circumstances of the suspension to Trump’s new post about ABC’s decision to bring the show back. The line-by-line format let him answer Trump’s complaint and lawsuit warning directly, then present the exchange as a confrontation with a bully.

What the exchange does—and does not—establish
The exchange documents a public dispute over Kimmel’s reinstatement and Trump’s criticism of ABC. It does not, by itself, resolve the legal implications of the suspension, the FCC chairman’s comments, or the network’s decisions. Those points should be distinguished from the reported chronology and the words attributed to Kimmel and Trump.
