The Gentlemen brings Guy Ritchie’s crime-comedy sensibility to an eight-episode Netflix series: an aristocratic inheritance draws Eddie Horniman into a cannabis empire and a contest for underworld power. Its slick dialogue, capers and class satire give Ritchie more room to stretch out—but whether the formula improves over a season or grows repetitive depends on the viewer.
What is Netflix’s The Gentlemen about?
Eddie Horniman, the estranged son of an English aristocrat, inherits his family estate and discovers that it is entangled with criminal Bobby Glass’s cannabis operation. Bobby’s daughter, Susie Glass, manages the business day to day. Eddie initially wants out, but the inheritance pulls him into negotiations with the Glass family and their rivals—and he begins to find the criminal life more appealing than he expected. Netflix Tudum’s series guide lays out the premise and characters.
The show’s central joke is that aristocrats and gangsters are not as different as they like to think: both inherit or wield power, protect their interests and expect others to respect their status. Eddie’s education in power is a through-line, rather than simply a succession of criminal set pieces.
Is the series a remake of the 2019 film?
No. The series takes place in the world of Ritchie’s 2019 film but tells a new story with different principal characters. The film follows a separate criminal enterprise; the series centers on Eddie, Susie and the Glass family. Watching the film is not necessary to follow the show, though it offers a companion piece for viewers curious about the setting and Ritchie’s earlier version of it.

What makes it feel like a Guy Ritchie series?
Ritchie created and co-wrote The Gentlemen, executive-produced it, and directed its first two episodes. Matthew Read also co-wrote and executive-produced the series, according to Netflix Tudum. The show carries over the brisk banter, criminal schemes, stylish presentation and comic clashes of social class associated with Ritchie’s crime stories.

The episodic format changes the rhythm. The Associated Press notes that scenes have more room to breathe than in some of Ritchie’s faster films, while the story can build its criminal relationships across a season. That extra space is also a risk: recurring quips, reversals and displays of style can start to feel familiar when repeated over multiple episodes.
Does the style work across a full season?
There is no single critical verdict that makes the title’s claim—that Ritchie perfects his signature “vibes”—an objective fact. The Associated Press describes a blend of thriller, satire, gangster caper, soap opera and absurd humor, and sees the series’ mix as part of its appeal. TIME critic Judy Berman also recognizes its slick visuals, quippy dialogue and class satire, but argues that the stylistic devices grow tiresome over eight episodes.

Those views point to the same trade-off. Viewers who enjoy Ritchie’s high-energy dialogue, capers and irreverent treatment of class may welcome the longer canvas. Those who find that style repetitive may agree with TIME’s reservation. The show expands the formula; whether that expansion perfects it is a matter of taste.
