Episode details
“The Bird Always Knows” is Season 2, Episode 5 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. AMC lists its original air date as June 1, 2025, and describes the episode this way: “Negan makes some big moves, while Maggie takes matters into her own hands.” AMC’s episode listing supplies the official title, date, and synopsis.
Narvaez’s mutiny puts Maggie and her allies in danger
Ginny reveals that Negan is still alive, and Major Lucia Narvaez turns against her own group. She imprisons Perlie and Roksana, then uses Maggie as bait to draw Negan into a trap. Maggie attempts to kill Narvaez, but Ginny betrays her, leaving Maggie with little choice but to surrender.
Narvaez stages an execution to impose her version of unity. Roksana refuses to join New Babylon’s cause, and Narvaez hangs her. Maggie is next in immediate danger, but before Narvaez can finish the execution, a huge walker herd arrives. The herd overruns the Foragers and the surviving New Babylonians, turning Narvaez’s show of control into a disaster. Ginny helps Maggie escape, and the reanimated Roksana kills Narvaez.

#1 Best Overall
- The Walking Dead: Dead City - Season 2 [Blu-Ray]
The sequence makes coercion look less like a path to order than a way to create more enemies and leave everyone exposed. Maggie’s survival, meanwhile, does not resolve the unstable bond between her and Ginny: Ginny’s betrayal helped put Maggie in danger, even as Ginny later rescued her.
Hershel admits what he did as Ginny hides a wound
After the attack, Hershel admits that he betrayed the group. The confession adds another breach of trust to an expedition already fractured by mutiny and shifting loyalties. Ginny also conceals a large wound on her back. The episode establishes the injury but does not settle what it will mean for her.

Bruegel and his gang clear walkers and seek help from Maggie and Perlie. Their approach leaves room for another alignment, but the episode does not yet show what help they will receive.
Negan exploits a split in the Burazi leadership
Elsewhere, Negan approaches Christos about joining an alliance. He learns that Christos is trying to protect a group of survivors, rather than pursuing power for its own sake. That distinction gives Negan a possible partner—and a way to unsettle the existing balance.

A sabotage incident, apparently caused by Christos’s gang, leads the Burazi to massacre the men. The killings anger both Negan and the Dama. Negan then drives a wedge between the Dama and the Croat. He kills the Dama’s pet rat, and the confrontation becomes violent. The Croat leaves the Dama behind in a fire accidentally started during their clash.
Negan’s maneuvering is not straightforward alliance-building: he is working across competing interests and deepening a rupture within the Burazi leadership. The ending leaves that fracture unresolved, with the Croat gone and the Dama in danger.

How Episode 5 shifts the season’s power struggle
The episode puts two strategies side by side. Narvaez tries to secure unity through imprisonment and a staged execution; the result is a mass-casualty attack and her own death. Negan, by contrast, works through information, alliances, and conflict between rivals. That approach creates opportunities, but also makes an already divided Manhattan more volatile.
The episode bridges the power plays of the installments around it. AMC’s description of Episode 4 says Maggie uncovers surprising information while Negan tries to outmaneuver a slippery foe. For Episode 6, AMC says Maggie considers an alliance as the outcome of Negan’s actions comes to a head. The next installment’s official framing points toward consequences and coalition-building rather than a settled victory. AMC’s series page lists the adjacent episode descriptions.
