The evidence available here supports five examples, not ten equally well-documented names. These profiles distinguish solo writing from collaboration and tie each claim to the source that supports it.
What “writing your own songs” means
A singer may write lyrics, compose melodies, contribute to arrangements, or build a song with co-writers. Those are different forms of authorship, and a collaboration is still songwriting. Pop songs can involve several writers and producers; long-running partnerships such as Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and Elton John and Bernie Taupin, are part of that history. A music retailer’s 2026 editorial on songwriting and collaboration discusses these practices.
The examples below are not all supported in the same way: some sources identify a specific album or song, while others describe an artist’s wider songwriting career. That distinction matters when evaluating what a source actually establishes.
Singers with documented songwriting contributions
Taylor Swift: solo writing on Speak Now
The Songwriters Hall of Fame describes Swift’s album Speak Now as a “singular songwriting effort,” with no collaborations on any of its 14 tracks. That statement applies to this album; it should not be generalized to her entire catalog. The Hall of Fame biography also says she has written songs for other artists. Dolly Parton: songwriting at the start of her career
Parton’s official biography says she moved to Nashville in 1964 and earned recognition as a gifted songwriter, citing “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.” It presents songwriting as foundational to a career that later expanded into recording, performance, film, and philanthropy. Dolly Parton’s official biography.
Carole King: songs for herself and other performers
King’s official biography says she wrote her first number-one hit, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” at 17. It also identifies Tapestry as her 1971 solo album and notes that other performers recorded songs she wrote. Her career illustrates that a songwriter may create music both to perform and for other artists. Carole King’s official biography.

James Taylor: a songwriter known for personal writing
Taylor’s official biography describes his songs as personal and universal, and says he is skilled at describing specific, sometimes autobiographical situations. It names “Fire and Rain,” “Carolina in My Mind,” and “Sweet Baby James.” This source supports his broader identity as a songwriter; a claim about who wrote a particular track should be checked against that song’s credits. Elton John: a composer in partnership with Bernie Taupin
John’s biography says he began working with lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1967 after responding to a songwriter advertisement. His first breakthrough as a singer came with Empty Sky, featuring songs the pair wrote. This is a prominent example of collaborative songwriting: John is a composer in the partnership, not the sole lyricist. Elton John’s biography.
How to judge songwriting claims fairly
- Look for the level of evidence. A named song or album credit is more specific than a general biography describing someone as a songwriter.
- Separate solo writing from co-writing. Both count as authorship; the distinction describes how a song was made, not whether the singer deserves credit.
- Check the exact work. An album-specific statement, such as the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s account of Speak Now, does not establish the credits for every song in an artist’s catalog.
- Use track-level credits for track-level claims. A broad career biography may support a songwriter profile without proving who wrote a particular song.
These five profiles are the names supported by the sources cited here. They should not be treated as a complete or definitive ranking of singers who write their own songs.
