There is no objective measure of who was the toughest woman in Japanese wrestling. This ranking weighs documented athletic or combat-sport credentials, forceful match reputations and rivalries, career standing, and the ability to perform across eras. It does not treat professional wrestling’s scripted outcomes and character work as proof of real-world fighting superiority—or define toughness simply as taking the most punishment.
Japanese women’s professional wrestling, often called joshi puroresu, has roots that reach back to the late 1940s, well before All-Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling (AJW) became its best-known stage. The scene has moved between athletic competition, theatrical storytelling, and popular entertainment; its history includes the star-making Beauty Pair as well as later generations and inter-promotional rivalries. Puroresu.com’s history of joshi and Nippon.com’s account of women’s wrestling in Japan offer context for that broader story.
The order below is an editorial judgment, not a statistical ranking. The strongest available evidence supports some entries more specifically than others, so the reasons and match references are part of the ranking—not a claim that the exact positions are definitive.
How this ranking weighs toughness
“Toughness” can mean different things in a wrestling history. Here it means a combination of documented athletic or combat-sport background, a record of forceful or high-stakes match work, importance in major rivalries and title programs, and longevity or impact across periods. Character portrayal matters to a wrestler’s place in the story, but it is not evidence by itself of real-world combat ability. Nor does a win or loss in a scripted match establish who would prevail in an unscripted fight.

The historical sources establish especially clear cases for Shinobu Kandori, Bull Nakano, Aja Kong, and Dump Matsumoto. The other six are major figures in joshi history, but the material available here does not establish individualized match-based evidence or career rationales strong enough to rank them responsibly. Rather than invent precision for a complete top ten, this list names the supported candidates and explains where the evidence is thinner.
The best-supported toughness candidates
1. Shinobu Kandori
Kandori has the clearest documented combat-sport credential in this group: the Tokyo Dome City / Korakuen Hall archive says she won the All Japan Women’s Judo Championship three years in a row. She made her professional wrestling debut as the main-event wrestler at Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling’s inaugural show on August 17, 1986. The archive describes her wrestling as powerful and technically grounded, and recounts unusually physical encounters, including a confrontation with Jackie Satō, as well as later mixed and vale-tudo bouts. Those facts make her the strongest case here for combining a prior combat-sport background with a reputation for intensity in wrestling. Korakuen Hall’s archive and Kandori interview is the source for those biographical details.

In the archived interview, Kandori says she wanted to break the limits of women’s professional wrestling and felt she had a stronger focus on pursuing strength than other wrestlers. That is her own account of her ambition, not an objective comparison of the roster. The distinction matters: her judo record is documented; a universal measure of toughness is not.
2. Bull Nakano
Nakano’s case rests on championship standing, imposing presence, and elite rivalries rather than a cited combat-sport record. WWE’s biography highlights physical encounters with Aja Kong and Manami Toyota and traces Nakano’s later international career. Monthly Puroresu describes her position at the top of AJW and the challenge of replacing her as champion. Together, these sources support her place among the era’s leading wrestlers, though they do not establish a comparative toughness statistic. WWE’s Bull Nakano profile and Monthly Puroresu’s history of Nakano’s AJW period provide the career and rivalry context.
Rank #3

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Aja Kong
Kong belongs in any serious account of hard-hitting AJW-era rivalries, especially opposite Nakano. Monthly Puroresu documents their rivalry and the title transition between them, giving Kong a firm place in a major championship story. That supports a ranking based on high-stakes opposition and stature; without a specific documented match account here, it would go too far to claim that one particular bout proves she was tougher than her rivals. Monthly Puroresu’s Nakano history is the source for the rivalry and title context.
4. Dump Matsumoto
Matsumoto’s ranking reflects the combination of documented career achievement and the way her imposing villain character helped drive AJW’s rivalries. Puroresu Central lists her AJW career, her 1985 Tag League the Best win, championship history, and notable matches against leading performers. Nippon.com’s broader account helps place such rivalries within the popular and theatrical dimensions of women’s wrestling in Japan. Her persona is part of the performance, not proof of genuine fighting superiority; her documented match record and role in major programs are the firmer grounds for inclusion. Puroresu Central’s Dump Matsumoto profile and Nippon.com’s historical overview support this entry.

Six important names that need more match-level evidence to rank
Devil Masami, Akira Hokuto, Manami Toyota, Chigusa Nagayo, Lioness Asuka, and Jaguar Yokota are important candidates in the history of joshi puroresu. Their prominence in the historical frame is not enough, on its own, to assign precise positions in a toughness ranking. A defensible placement for each would need direct evidence such as named match records, career details, or documented longevity—not reputation alone. They are therefore acknowledged here as part of the wider field rather than given unsupported numerical slots.
This distinction also keeps the ranking from flattening different generations into one AJW-centered story. Nippon.com describes how star duo Jackie Satō and Maki Ueda—the Beauty Pair—helped AJW through a difficult period, while the history traced by Puroresu.com reaches earlier than the promotion’s celebrated boom. Those contexts show why a serious history must account for changing presentation and eras, even when it cannot fairly score every wrestler on one scale.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish
- It can establish specific career facts. Kandori’s three consecutive All Japan Women’s Judo Championship wins and 1986 main-event debut are concrete biographical details; Matsumoto’s 1985 Tag League the Best win is a record-based point.
- It can establish important rivalries and title context. Nakano’s clashes with Kong and Toyota, and the Nakano–Kong title story, support their standing in the AJW era.
- It cannot produce a universal toughness score. The available sources do not provide a comparable statistic for measuring toughness across Japanese women’s wrestling history.
- It cannot turn performance into a real-world fighting ranking. Professional wrestling combines athletic work with character, storytelling, and planned outcomes; the evidence here supports judgments about wrestling careers, not unscripted fighting ability.
