“SNL50” can mean either the February 16, 2025 anniversary special or the show’s 50th season. This list takes a wider view: it pairs sketches named by former cast members as personal favorites with the official Season 50 live and pretaped platform-view leaders. It is not a lineup of twelve sketches from the anniversary special, nor an objective all-time ranking.
“Best” here is an editorial call: the selections offer a mix of memorable comic premises, recurring characters, formats and eras, with performer recommendations and Season 50 audience engagement as useful but limited signals. The official view-based lists reflect activity across SNL’s digital platforms; they are not a universal measure of quality or a ranking of the show’s history.
What are the best SNL sketches to watch?
These twelve picks are divided between legacy favorites named by SNL performers and the official Season 50 platform-view leaders. The first group is attributed personal taste, not consensus. The second consists of ten sketches—five live and five pretaped—that SNL identified as its most-watched in those categories across its digital platforms.

“More Cowbell”
Will Forte and Seth Meyers both named this sketch among their favorites in Associated Press anniversary coverage. The shared recommendation makes it a natural starting point, though it remains their personal choice rather than a formal ranking. Read the AP’s performer-favorites report.

“Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer”
Will Forte included the recurring character among his favorites. The premise gives the sketch a distinctive comic engine: a lawyer presents himself as bewildered by modern life. Forte’s picks, via AP.
-
“The Chanukah Song”
Forte also singled out Adam Sandler’s song. Its musical format offers a different kind of SNL showcase from character-driven sketches. Forte’s picks, via AP.
-
“Haunted Elevator”
Bobby Moynihan named this sketch, featuring Tom Hanks as David S. Pumpkins, among his favorites. Its central character became recognizable enough to anchor a repeat appearance, making it a useful pick for viewers who want a recurring-character entry rather than a one-off premise. “What’s Up With That?”
Jason Sudeikis chose the recurring sketch. Its return-friendly format and musical interruptions make it a good example of SNL building a comic world that can be revisited. Sudeikis’s pick, via AP.

“The Wizard of Oz”
Fred Armisen’s favorite was a John Mulaney-written sketch in which Armisen played a weather vane alongside Anne Hathaway’s Dorothy. It is a less obvious choice than a familiar recurring character, and offers a glimpse of the oddball premises performers may remember most fondly. Armisen’s pick, via AP.

“Forever 31”
First in the official pretaped list. It leads this narrow platform-view category, not a show-wide measure of quality.
To include all five pretaped leaders without implying a thirteen-item list, here they are together: “Forever 31,” “My Best Friend’s House,” “CouplaBeers,” “An Act of Kindness,” and “TikTok.” Each was named in SNL’s official Season 50 pretaped-sketch video; the source provides no view totals to compare individual gaps or quantify their reach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the picks
SNL has no single authoritative top twelve in the sources behind this selection. The performer favorites are recommendations attributed to the people who chose them; the Season 50 lists are platform-view rankings limited to one season and SNL’s digital platforms. Neither type of evidence proves a universal audience consensus.
That variety is part of the point. Seth Meyers described the show’s unevenness to AP: “It’s so beautifully uneven. I’ve always said the worst show has something great and the best show has something terrible,” Bowen Yang, meanwhile, spoke to SNL’s range: “I think with a show like ‘SNL,’ we have the latitude to be a little variety show and give you different sensibilities and different parts of that, different perspectives.” Those comments describe the format, not a ranking of these sketches.
