Problemista is a surreal comedy about an aspiring toy designer whose dwindling work-visa time makes a volatile art-world figure his unlikely best hope. Tilda Swinton’s Elizabeth is the film’s most forceful presence: domineering, frighteningly self-involved and often very funny. The film’s bureaucratic nightmares give that odd-couple story a vivid comic world, though its imaginative detours do not always add up to an equally steady narrative.
What is Problemista about?
Written and directed by Julio Torres, who also stars, Problemista follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador trying to build a future in New York as his work-visa time runs out. He becomes entangled with Elizabeth, an art-world outcast whose help may give him a way to remain in the country and keep pursuing his work. A24’s synopsis frames that arrangement as Alejandro helping Elizabeth with a project involving her husband’s art; the favor becomes a precarious lifeline as well as a source of escalating complications.
The setup turns familiar pressures—paperwork, employment and the need to find someone willing to vouch for you—into surreal comic terrain. Rather than treating bureaucracy as a dry obstacle, Torres makes it feel like an exhausting maze that can swallow a person’s attention and time.
Why does Tilda Swinton dominate the film?
Elizabeth is the engine of the film’s volatile relationship. Swinton plays her as self-involved and demanding, with a comic intensity that can also be genuinely intimidating. Calling her a “Karen-on-steroids” is a critic’s shorthand for that outsized, entitled behavior, not a phrase attributed to Torres or the filmmakers. The performance is more interesting than a simple caricature: Elizabeth’s frightening recognizability gives her absurd demands an edge.

The contrast with Alejandro supplies the central comic tension. He is anxious and trying to make a life; she acts as if the world should rearrange itself around her needs. The Los Angeles Times highlighted the unusual mentorship dynamic between them and Swinton’s unnerving Elizabeth. Their connection is not an uncomplicated story of a benevolent mentor rescuing a newcomer: Alejandro’s dependence on her makes every favor feel like it could turn into another test.
Does the surreal comedy work?
Torres gives abstract pressures visual form, making the systems around Alejandro seem as strange and consuming as they feel to him. That imaginative approach is a natural fit for a story about trying to navigate rules that appear opaque, arbitrary or impossible to satisfy. The Guardian praised the way immigration lends itself to magical-realist imagery, while also calling the film uneven.

That reservation gets at the film’s main trade-off. Its strange images and comic inventions can sharpen the feeling of bureaucratic exhaustion, but the movement from one odd episode to the next does not always create a smooth sense of momentum. The film’s tone can shift, too: Elizabeth’s behavior is funny, yet its recognizability and the stakes of Alejandro’s predicament can make the comedy uncomfortable. The result is a film with distinctive ideas and a memorable lead performance rather than a perfectly balanced comic machine.
Is Problemista funny?
Yes, particularly when the humor comes from the collision between Alejandro’s vulnerable position and Elizabeth’s outrageous self-importance. The laughs are often surreal or uneasy rather than broad. The film is less consistent when its visual invention wanders away from the pressure driving the story, so viewers looking for a tightly paced conventional comedy may find its rhythm uneven.
