Spoilers for the ending of Abigail (2024). Matthew Goode appears in the closing minutes as Kristof Lazar, Abigail’s feared father. After Abigail and Joey defeat Frank, Lazar arrives and threatens Joey. Abigail intervenes, and Lazar lets Joey leave—for now. The cameo turns a danger talked about throughout the film into an immediate one, while leaving Lazar’s identity and the father-daughter relationship open to interpretation.
What happens at the end of Abigail?
After the kidnappers discover that Abigail is a vampire, the danger escalates when Frank becomes a vampire and turns against her and Joey. Abigail and Joey defeat him, but Joey’s ordeal is not quite over: as she tries to leave, Kristof Lazar arrives in person.
Lazar has been a looming threat throughout the story, known as Abigail’s powerful father and a feared crime lord. His arrival makes that reputation tangible. He treats Joey as a threat—or possibly prey—until Abigail steps between them and argues for her life.
Abigail tells her father that Joey helped her and that he owes her for it. Lazar allows Joey to go. It is a tense reprieve, not proof that he has become kind or that Joey is safe from him forever. Joey leaves, while Abigail and Lazar remain together.

Who plays Abigail’s father?
Matthew Goode plays Kristof Lazar. The filmmakers wanted an actor who could appear with only minutes left, make a strong impression, and still fit the film’s established tone. Co-director Tyler Gillett said Goode’s presence felt “ethereal and graceful,” an unsettling alternative to a conventional, physically imposing brute. Co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin summed up the cameo: “He really gave it to us.” Entertainment Weekly interviewed the directors about Goode’s appearance and performance.
The entrance was designed to make its mark without undoing what came before it. Gillett described the challenge as having a character arrive with three minutes left, leave an impression, and not break the preceding story. The directors also said the scene originally ran longer and was trimmed for pacing; it was shortened, not discarded because the cameo failed. Variety’s interview with the filmmakers discusses the ending and the production choices behind it.

Is Kristof Lazar Dracula?
Abigail strongly invites a Dracula reading, but it does not establish Lazar’s identity as explicit, settled fact. The vampire lore and Lazar’s suggestion that he has had many names encourage viewers to connect him with Dracula. The directors, however, discussed avoiding an overt Dracula reference because it would take away from making their own vampire movie. It is more accurate to say that Lazar is Dracula-like and may be intended to evoke Dracula than to state that the film confirms he is Dracula. The filmmakers’ comments on the Dracula references are reported by Variety; ComicBook.com’s plot explanation gives more background on the ending, though its definitive Dracula interpretation should be treated as interpretation rather than confirmation.
Why does Abigail let Joey go?
Abigail does not simply abandon Joey to her father. She argues directly for Joey’s life, pointing to Joey’s help and to Lazar’s debt to her. Lazar accepts that appeal and lets Joey leave. The scene resolves Joey’s immediate danger while keeping Lazar menacing: he grants Abigail’s request, but the film does not show a change in his nature.

Does the ending confirm an Abigail sequel?
No. Lazar’s arrival and the unresolved relationship between him and Abigail leave story possibilities, but the filmmakers said a sequel was not the original plan. They wanted the film to work as a complete story rather than simply function as setup for another one. The ending leaves room for a continuation; it is not an announcement or confirmation that one will be made. Variety’s interview covers the filmmakers’ comments on sequel intentions.
