It’s What’s Inside turns a body-swapping party game into a nimble thriller about secrets and identity. Its high-concept setup and some lively, twisty stretches make it easy to get pulled in; the Guardian’s Benjamin Lee argues that the film’s maximalist style and convoluted final act leave its characters and payoff shortchanged. Whether that trade-off works for you depends on how much you enjoy disorientation for its own sake.
What is It’s What’s Inside about?
At a pre-wedding gathering, a group of friends is joined by an estranged acquaintance carrying a device that can induce body swaps. The group agrees to try it, and the game quickly turns their old grudges, hidden desires, and secrets into immediate risks: no one can be sure whose body they are looking at, or what another person intends to do with it.
Greg Jardin wrote and directed the film, which Netflix describes as his feature debut. Netflix announced its acquisition on January 22, 2024, after the film premiered in Sundance’s Midnight section. Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Devon Terrell, Gavin Leatherwood, Reina Hardesty, Nina Bloomgarden, and David Thompson are among the cast. Does the body-swap premise make a good thriller?
It gives the film a strong dramatic mechanism. A normal party game might expose what friends think of one another; here, those revelations can be acted on through another person’s body. The premise makes trust, self-image, and control part of the suspense, while the social setting keeps the conflict personal rather than purely mechanical.

The catch is that viewers must keep track of shifting identities and intentions as the game grows more tangled. The same confusion that makes deception possible can also make the characters feel like pieces in a puzzle. A useful way to judge the film is to ask whether each new reversal deepens the people involved—or mainly adds another layer to decipher.
What works—and what is the blind spot?
The game has momentum
The setup gives the ensemble an immediate reason to lie, improvise, and test one another. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee found “some fun, twisty stretches,” especially as the game gets nastier. That is the film at its most engaging: its comic premise and thriller mechanics reinforce each other, and every change in the group’s balance can make an old grievance newly dangerous. Style and plot can crowd out character
Lee’s main reservation is that the film’s maximalist sound and editing, thinly sketched characters, and convoluted final act weaken the payoff. That is a critic’s assessment, not a measure of how every viewer will respond. But it points to the central limitation: if the ensemble’s shifting objectives become hard to read, the viewer may spend more energy sorting out the mechanics than caring about what the friends are doing to one another.
The film’s late reversals are best approached without a plot breakdown. For a spoiler-free verdict, the relevant question is not simply whether the ending is confusing; it is whether its revelations make the earlier tensions feel more meaningful. Lee’s review suggests the increasing complexity does not fully earn its final stretch.

Is It’s What’s Inside horror, comedy, or science fiction?
It is principally a thriller, but it draws on all three neighboring modes. The body-swapping device supplies the science-fiction premise, the party-game absurdity allows for dark comedy, and the characters’ loss of control gives the story an unsettling, sometimes horror-adjacent edge. Calling it only a horror movie would miss how much of its appeal comes from social maneuvering and twists.
Is It’s What’s Inside worth watching?
It is a reasonable pick if you like ensemble mysteries, identity games, and plots that keep changing the rules. Its clever central device and energetic turns are the draw. If you need fully developed characters or a cleanly resolved final act to make a thriller satisfying, the weaknesses Lee identifies may matter more than the premise’s novelty.
