The five San Felipe Mustangs were Lupe Felán, Felipe Romero, Mario Lomas, Gene Vasquez and Joe Treviño. Their team from Del Rio, Texas, finished second at the state high school tournament in 1956 and won the championship in 1957. Their later paths differed: Romero competed professionally on mini-tours, Treviño continued playing after a civil-service career, Felán served in the Marines, and Lomas became a PGA Tour caddie. The sources cited here identify Vasquez as a team member but do not establish what career he pursued afterward.
Who were the five San Felipe Mustangs?
The Mustangs were Mexican American students at San Felipe High School in Del Rio, Texas. The five players were Lupe Felán (also rendered as Felan), Felipe Romero, Mario Reyes Lomas, Gene Vasquez and Joe Treviño. Their story is the subject of Texas Public Radio’s 2024 account and the Texas House’s 2011 resolution recognizing the team.
How did the team win the 1957 championship?
The players learned golf while caddying, even though the San Felipe Country Club initially excluded them from playing. They practiced with outdated equipment and made a rough course of their own, known as El Llanito. The Texas House resolution describes discrimination and verbal abuse they faced in competition. With help from coach J.B. Peña, they returned after placing second in 1956 and won the 1957 state title.
The House resolution records a team score of 643, 35 strokes ahead of runner-up Shamrock High. Those figures describe the 1957 state championship, not a later professional event.

What happened to each golfer after the championship?
Felipe Romero
Romero was a sophomore when San Felipe won in 1957. He earned the tournament’s silver medal for the second-best individual score and remained on the team through his 1959 graduation. He later attended the first national PGA Business School in San Antonio and competed for 30 years on national and international golf mini-tours while working as a bus conductor and instructor for Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority. The Texas House’s 2011 resolution honoring Romero described him as retired but still an active golfer at the time it was written; that historical account does not establish his current status.
Joe Treviño
Treviño began caddying at age nine and won the tournament’s gold medal as its top individual golfer. After graduating, he entered civil service, worked in California and returned to Del Rio after retiring. The Texas House’s 2011 resolution honoring Treviño says he competed on senior and regional tours, held course records in California and Texas, and continued to play. PBS reporting also says he chose groundskeeping rather than a full-time professional golf career. Competing in tournaments and working outside professional golf are compatible parts of that record.

Lupe Felán
Felán played in the 1956 state tournament and was an alternate on the 1957 championship squad. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served for more than 30 years, retiring in 1990. He later worked for California’s Department of Motor Vehicles and remained involved in Southern California golf associations. The Texas House’s 2011 introduced resolution honoring Felan described him as having a single-digit handicap at that time. It is a dated snapshot, not confirmation of his present-day status.
Mario Lomas
PBS reports that Lomas became a caddie on the PGA Tour. The Texas House team resolution identifies him as Mario Reyes Lomas. The available accounts cited here do not establish a fuller career chronology or his current status.

Gene Vasquez
Vasquez is identified as one of the five players in the Texas House resolution and in Texas Public Radio’s team account. PBS also reports that he was among the former caddies interviewed about the team’s experiences. The sources cited here do not establish his later career or current status, so it would be misleading to assign him an occupation or life story without further evidence.
Was the team ever reported missing?
No. This is a question about what became of a historic high school golf team, not a missing-person case. An online claim that all five disappeared in 2023 conflicts with the documented accounts from Texas Public Radio, PBS and the Texas House. Those sources establish the team’s history and some players’ later careers, but they do not establish the present-day status of every member.
