The Mandalorian Season 4 has not arrived because the story shifted from a planned Disney+ season to a theatrical film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. Jon Favreau said the planned season assumed viewers knew the first three seasons, while the film needed to welcome both longtime fans and people new to Star Wars. That explains the change in format; it does not establish that a fourth season is permanently canceled.
Why did the planned fourth season become a film?
Jon Favreau, the series’ writer and executive producer, explained that the planned Season 4 story could not simply be carried over once the project became a movie. In an interview published by The Walt Disney Company, he said: “We knew we couldn’t just do what we were planning for Season 4, because that would assume everybody was familiar with the first three seasons.”
He said a theatrical release also needed to work for people who had not followed the series: “For a big movie like this, we had to be open to not just the audience that was familiar with everything that happened, but also a new audience that might want to experience Star Wars in a theater for the first time.”
That is the stated creative rationale: the season plan depended on prior familiarity, while the film was designed to be more accessible to newcomers as well as existing viewers. The official sources do not quantify the decision in terms of audience figures, budget, or scheduling, so those should not be treated as established explanations.

Is The Mandalorian and Grogu Season 4?
No. Lucasfilm presents The Mandalorian and Grogu as a standalone big-screen story that picks up where the Disney+ series left off. It continues the characters’ story, but it is a theatrical film rather than a numbered fourth season. See Lucasfilm’s film page.

Has Season 4 been canceled?
The available official material does not establish that a future Season 4 is permanently canceled. It establishes that the planned season story gave way to a film and explains why the creators viewed the formats differently. It does not rule out the possibility of another season later, either.
Lucasfilm describes The Mandalorian as a Disney+ series that debuted in November 2019 and identifies Jon Favreau as its writer and executive producer: Lucasfilm’s series page. That background does not change the distinction: the released continuation is a feature film, and the sources do not announce a Season 4.
