Three Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for Vienna on August 8–10, 2024, were cancelled the day before they were due to begin after Austrian authorities warned of a security threat. The lead defendant was later convicted by a court in Wiener Neustadt and sentenced to 15 years in prison in May 2026. The public record includes both investigators’ assessment of the threat and the defense’s challenge to how serious it was.
Why were the Vienna concerts cancelled?
The Eras Tour was scheduled to play three nights at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion, on August 8, 9 and 10, 2024. On August 7, Austrian authorities announced arrests and warned of an elevated security risk. Concert organizer Barracuda Music then cancelled all three shows. The Austrian Parliament document recording lawmakers’ questions about the cancellations and the Combating Terrorism Center’s account of the disruption describe the scheduled concerts and cancellation.
A parliamentary document dated August 12, 2024, asked the interior minister when national leaders and concert organizers had been informed, what security arrangements were planned, and how responsibilities were divided. It is a set of questions, not an official response establishing the answers.
What did authorities say the plan involved?
An August 15, 2024 report by Austrian public broadcaster ORF, based on a Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) report in the investigation file, said partner services had passed information about a planned attack six days before the first concert. The DSN described the suspected attacker as an “IS-inspired lone actor.” ORF also reported the defendant’s statement that he intended to travel to Vienna on August 8 or 9 to carry out an attack. ORF’s account of the DSN report and the defense response attributes these details to the investigative record.

When prosecutors filed terrorism-related charges against the 21-year-old defendant in February 2026, the Associated Press reported that they alleged he had declared allegiance to the Islamic State group by sharing propaganda, obtained online instructions for a TATP-based shrapnel bomb, produced a small amount of the explosive, and tried to buy weapons illegally abroad. These are prosecution allegations as reported by AP, not a separate account of facts established at that stage. AP’s February 16, 2026 report on the charges also says U.S. intelligence information contributed to the cancellation decision.
How did U.S. intelligence fit into the warning?
Austrian reporting described the warning as information passed by partner services. In August 2024, then-White House national security spokesman John Kirby publicly confirmed that the United States had shared information with Austrian partners to help disrupt a threat to the Vienna concerts. The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point later quoted CIA Deputy Director David Cohen describing the plot as “quite advanced” and intended to kill “tens of thousands of people,” including “many Americans.” That is Cohen’s characterization as reported in the analysis, not a verified casualty estimate. The CTC Sentinel analysis, published in January 2025, provides the attributed statements and context on intelligence cooperation.

How serious was the threat? The public dispute
The investigative authority and the defense did not describe the threat in the same way. ORF reported that the DSN report characterized the suspect’s actions as undertaken with the intent to kill, injure, or endanger many people. Defense lawyer Werner Tomanek challenged the seriousness of the plan, arguing that the everyday chemicals seized could not have produced a functioning bomb. These are, respectively, the authority’s assessment and the defense position; the public accounts cited here do not resolve that dispute through an independent technical finding.
