Netflix’s companion account describes demanding hikes, severe living conditions and punishments; those descriptions should be understood as Netflix’s account, not as independently verified findings. The available sources do not establish a verified sequence of thirteen separate revelations, so this guide focuses on the most consequential claims and clearly separates allegations from reported legal outcomes.
What happened at Challenger Foundation camp?
Netflix says the Challenger Foundation was founded in 1988 by Steve Cartisano and operated in Southern Utah. Its camp was based in Escalante, in and around Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Netflix’s official media synopsis describes the documentary as exposing brutal conditions and alleged abuse, preserving the distinction between allegations and proven findings.
In its December 28, 2023 companion article, Netflix describes a program lasting 63 days or longer and a 500-mile hike. It says campers slept on the ground, pulled handcarts, skinned and cooked animals, and had little access to toilets or privacy. Netflix also reports that complaints could bring punishments, including rocks added to backpacks and campers tied by their hands and feet. These details are Netflix’s account of what the documentary depicts; the available sources do not independently verify each practice. Netflix Tudum’s explainer and the Netflix Media Center synopsis provide the company’s description.
Who ran the program, and how did its leaders explain it?
Netflix identifies Cartisano, a former Air Force sergeant, as the foundation’s founder and president. It identifies Lance “Horsehair” Jaggar, also described as a former Air Force member, as field director. Netflix’s article quotes Jaggar describing the approach as intended to “break [them] down” so teens could become “better” and “more positive.” Those are fragments reported by Netflix, not a separately reviewed interview transcript.

Netflix also attributes to Cartisano the claim that the program “saved the lives of countless troubled youths.” That is his stated defense of the program, not an independent assessment of its safety or effectiveness.
What happened to Kristen Chase?
Netflix reports that 16-year-old camper Kristen Chase died of heatstroke during an expedition. The Tudum article says Cartisano faced child-abuse and negligent-homicide charges, was found not guilty, and later settled with Chase’s parents out of court. The acquittal means he was not convicted of those charges; the reported civil settlement is separate and should not be read as a criminal finding or conviction. The available account does not include underlying court records.

Was Steve Cartisano convicted?
No. Netflix’s December 2023 account says Cartisano was found not guilty of the charges it describes. It also reports an out-of-court settlement with Chase’s parents. These are distinct outcomes: an acquittal is a criminal-court result, while a civil settlement does not itself establish criminal guilt. Cartisano died in 2019, according to Netflix.
Did Paris Hilton go to Challenger camp?
No, according to Netflix. Hilton attended Provo Canyon School, not the Challenger Foundation. Netflix says she has alleged abuse at Provo Canyon similar to what occurred at Challenger, but the two institutions are separate and should not be conflated.

How does Challenger fit into Utah’s troubled-teen industry?
In a January 24, 2024 report, Axios placed the documentary’s story in a wider discussion of Utah’s troubled-teen treatment industry. Axios reported that Challenger faced abuse and neglect accusations, filed for bankruptcy after a teen died during a hike in 1990, and faced lawsuits. The report also discussed industry criticism and regulatory concerns. Those points describe Axios’s reporting at that date, not a current assessment of Utah regulation. Axios’s January 2024 report provides that context.
Why the title’s “13 reveals” needs a qualification
The available official and reported sources do not establish thirteen independently verified revelations or a definitive sequence of thirteen events. Netflix’s companion material supports a focused account of the camp, its reported practices, key figures and the Chase case; Axios adds dated industry context. Treating every detail as a confirmed fact—or padding the story to reach thirteen—would overstate what those sources establish.
