Spoilers for season one; sensitive content: The Netflix series’ 13 reasons are the people and story subjects Hannah Baker addresses across the sides of her recorded tapes. In order, they are Justin, Jessica, Alex, Tyler, Courtney, Marcus, Zach, Ryan, Sheri, Clay, Hannah herself, Bryce, and counselor Kevin Porter. The list reflects Hannah’s account in the drama; it is not a complete or general explanation of suicide.
Who was on Hannah Baker’s tapes, in order?
The series presents the recordings as tape sides, not 13 separate cassette objects. Netflix’s series listing describes Clay Jensen receiving Hannah’s recorded messages. The subject-by-subject sequence below follows a season-one episode guide; the descriptions are Hannah’s perspective within the story, not an objective assessment of every character or event.

- Justin Foley: Hannah recounts the rumor that spread after her first kiss with Justin, and his later failure to intervene when Bryce assaulted Jessica.
- Jessica Davis: Hannah says Jessica believed rumors about her and accused her of taking Alex away, helping bring their friendship to an end.
- Alex Standall: Alex put Hannah on a “hot or not” list, intensifying sexualized gossip about her.
- Tyler Down: Tyler stalked Hannah and took a photograph of her through her bedroom window.
- Courtney Crimsen: After helping Hannah catch Tyler, Courtney spread a rumor about Hannah that further harmed her reputation.
- Marcus Cole: During a Valentine’s fundraiser date, Marcus behaved inappropriately and insulted Hannah after she rejected him.
- Zach Dempsey: After Hannah rejected him, Zach took the anonymous encouraging notes she had been receiving in class.
- Ryan Shaver: Ryan published one of Hannah’s poems without her permission, humiliating her.
- Sheri Holland: Sheri caused a collision with a stop sign and did not report the damage. A later crash at the intersection killed Jeff, Clay’s friend.
- Clay Jensen: Hannah includes Clay because he is part of her story. The episode guide makes clear she does not blame him in the same way as the other subjects; she had asked him to leave her alone at Jessica’s party.
- Hannah Baker: Hannah turns the story toward her own choices and feelings. This part should not be reduced to self-blame or treated as a clinical explanation for suicide.
- Bryce Walker: Bryce raped Hannah at a party. This is sexual assault.
- Kevin Porter: The school counselor failed to respond adequately after Hannah sought help and disclosed the assault.
Why is Clay one of the 13?
Clay is included because he is central to Hannah’s story, not because she assigns him the same kind of blame as the other tape subjects. Her account of asking him to leave at Jessica’s party is part of their complicated history, but the episode guide distinguishes his tape from the accusations directed at the others.
Are the show’s 13 reasons the same as the book’s?
No. Netflix’s drama is based on Jay Asher’s novel, as Paramount’s title information notes, but the show’s episode sequence should not be substituted with details from the book. A character reference for the novel gives a different ordering and identifies Jenny Kurtz where the television episode guide names Sheri Holland. This article follows the Netflix series.

What the list does—and does not—mean
The “13 reasons” are a storytelling device: Hannah’s recorded account of people and events she connects to her life. They do not establish that 13 discrete actions fully explain a suicide, nor do they offer a model for understanding suicide in real life. The series also addresses bullying, sexual assault, and substance use. Netflix’s catalog includes companion videos such as “The Many Forms of Bullying,” “Spotting Signs of Depression,” “Understanding Consent,” and “Taking Signs of Potential Harm Seriously.”
