Spoilers for *Shōgun* Episode 9, “Crimson Sky.” Mariko’s decision to risk death is both personal and political. Actor Anna Sawai says Mariko has spent years wanting to follow her executed family, but now understands that her father wanted her to live long enough to carry out his purpose. By trying to leave Osaka with Toranaga’s consorts, she turns that purpose into open resistance: her threatened suicide forces Ishido’s regime to confront the political cost of keeping nobles captive.
Why does Mariko try to leave Osaka?
Mariko is not simply trying to escape. In an interview with ELLE published April 17, 2024, Sawai describes her as having long wished to join her family in death. Her father was killed and her family executed after his rebellion; Mariko eventually realizes, Sawai says, that he wanted her to survive and complete what he could not.
That purpose is to serve Toranaga. “This is what my life purpose is, and whether you stop me or not, I’m going to achieve this goal. And her goal is to serve her lord,” Sawai told ELLE. Episode 9 gives Mariko a chance to act on that purpose openly. By insisting on escorting Toranaga’s consorts out of Osaka, she challenges the restrictions holding them there and exposes the regents’ control of the castle’s occupants.
Why does she threaten suicide?
The gate confrontation is a public test of Ishido’s authority, not a plan to force her way out by sheer strength. Sawai says Mariko knows she is unlikely to be killed outright at the gate and is trying to make a statement, even as her people are hurt. Her use of the naginata shows her resolve, but also that force alone will not secure her departure.

Her threatened seppuku raises the cost of refusing her. As Vanity Fair’s April 17, 2024 interview and TheWrap’s April 17, 2024 interview explain, Ishido faces a political bind: let a high-ranking woman leave and others may follow, or keep her there and risk her death making Osaka look like a prison to the elite whose support he needs.
For Mariko, the threat is more than a bluff. She is willing to die rather than let Ishido define her choices. Blackthorne offers to act as her second, a gesture that Sawai describes to ELLE as a moment when Mariko recognizes that he would put her above himself. It is intimate, but also practical: he is prepared to help her meet the death she considers right, despite the conflict with his Christian beliefs. Ishido’s permit arrives before the ritual is carried out.

How is the threatened death different from Mariko’s actual death?
The ritual is interrupted. After Mariko receives permission to leave, the night attack traps her and the others in a storeroom. She dies in the explosion while protecting those with her, according to TIME’s April 16, 2024 episode explainer and TheWrap’s interview with Sawai. Her eventual death is not the self-inflicted death she threatened at the gate. The story instead makes her sacrifice part of the same protest and mission: she has forced Ishido to reveal what his control of Osaka means, and she dies protecting the people caught in the attack.
What does Anna Sawai say Mariko’s choice means?
Sawai emphasizes that Mariko has agency even when she lacks the freedom to speak or act without constraint. “Just because she doesn’t have the actual voice to be able to say it, doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have her own destiny or she can’t make her own decisions,” she told ELLE. She also told TheWrap that the episode “really allows her to express everything that she had kept in because she had to.”

In that reading, Mariko’s choice is not a sudden embrace of death. It is the culmination of a life shaped by family loss and a purpose she has only recently understood. The threatened ritual makes her resolve visible; her later death comes by another route, but still while she is acting for others and for the cause she chose.

*Shōgun* is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel and is loosely inspired by events in turn-of-the-17th-century Japan, as TIME notes. The show’s portrayal should be distinguished from historical practice. TIME explains that seppuku specifically refers to disembowelment and was reserved for men of the samurai class; samurai women traditionally used other methods, such as cutting the throat or stabbing the heart. The episode appears to suggest Mariko intends the latter. TIME identifies historical Hosokawa Gracia as part of the character’s background, while ELLE notes uncertainty around details of her death. These parallels provide context, not proof that the episode depicts a single settled historical account.
