Krypto races in, grabs him, and drags him home. That unexpected rescue, paired with vivid comic-book color and a guitar-led reworking of John Williams’ familiar theme, made the first teaser for James Gunn’s Superman feel markedly different from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
“We’re not in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe anymore” works as a description of that shift in presentation and tone—not as proof, from the teaser alone, of every continuity rule in the new film.
Which Superman trailer is this?
The images of Krypto rescuing an injured Superman and the electric-guitar version of the Williams theme come from the first teaser, released in December 2024. It introduced a visual and emotional direction; it did not lay out a complete account of the film’s continuity.
That teaser is distinct from the official trailer DC broke down in May 2025. The later trailer is organized around Lois Lane interviewing Clark and includes substantially more character and story material. DC’s May 2025 breakdown discusses characters including the Engineer, Jimmy Olsen, Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, Lex Luthor, and the Kents. Those later-trailer details should not be mistaken for scenes or revelations from the December teaser.

Why do Gunn’s colors feel unlike Man of Steel?
The clearest evidence for a deliberate visual contrast comes from the production team. Supervising art director David Scott said Gunn wanted the film to feel “like the comics, colorful and exciting,” and described the work of developing its palette, including its blues and reds. Scott also identified color and tone as points of departure from the darker, moodier presentation of Man of Steel. Scott’s interview with The Credits offers a production-design explanation for what the teaser puts on screen.
The distinction is not simply that one film has color and the other does not. It is about emphasis: Gunn’s stated aim was a comic-book world that feels bright and exciting, while Snyder’s film is associated here with a darker, moodier visual approach. The teaser’s palette makes that shift legible before it explains much about the story.

What does the Williams theme signal?
The teaser uses an electric-guitar arrangement of John Williams’ Superman theme. That recognizable melody carries the sound of an earlier Superman tradition, but the cue is not simply the untouched 1978 recording. Gunn told Variety: “I want to use a version of the Williams theme, but I want to do our own version of it.” He also said the score includes original material by John Murphy.
That choice mirrors the teaser’s broader approach: acknowledge familiar Superman imagery, then present it through a new arrangement and a more colorful frame. It is recognition with reinterpretation, rather than a claim that the new film is a continuation of the earlier movie’s musical or visual style.

Why is Krypto dragging Superman home?
In the December teaser, Superman is hurt in an icy landscape and whistles for Krypto, who pulls him away. The moment shifts the hero from a distant figure of spectacle to someone visibly vulnerable, relying on a companion for help. It gives the teaser a note of tenderness without removing its superhero scale. DC’s teaser breakdown identifies the rescue scene, while the Los Angeles Times reported Gunn’s caution that the relationship with Krypto is complicated and that the teaser does not show everything about the character.
The beat also fits Gunn’s stated interest in kindness. In Variety, he described the film as being about “the basic kindness of human beings” and how that quality can seem uncool or under siege. Krypto’s rescue makes care tangible in the teaser: Superman is not only the person who saves others; here, he is the one being helped.

Does the teaser establish a different DC continuity?
It establishes a Superman presented in a world where other superheroes exist. Gunn told Variety, “We’re embracing all of the Superman mythology,” and described a Superman who “lives in a world with superheroes.” The teaser includes glimpses of other heroes, supporting the sense of a populated DC setting rather than a story visually isolated around Superman.
That is a useful distinction in scope, but it is not a detailed continuity guide. The teaser supports a claim about the world and tone Gunn wanted to present; it does not, by itself, settle every relationship to prior DC films or explain the rules of the new setting.

What “not in Zack Snyder’s DC Universe” really means
As a critical framing, the line describes a strong change in visual and tonal priorities: comic-inspired color instead of a darker, moodier look; a familiar musical theme newly arranged; and an introduction that pairs superhero spectacle with vulnerability and companionship. David Scott’s comments and Gunn’s own remarks give that reading direct production and creative context.
It should not be stretched into a claim that the teaser proves a complete break in every continuity detail, or that Snyder’s films lacked moral or emotional dimension. The evidence here is narrower and more useful: Gunn’s first teaser signals a different way of seeing and feeling Superman, while leaving the larger continuity questions open.
