The Simian Flu is plausible only in fragments. Viruses can cross from animals to people, affect the brain, and—in some cases—spread between humans. But no demonstrated virus combines the films’ key traits: reliably increasing ape intelligence, causing severe human disease, spreading efficiently through the air, and later selectively stripping people of speech and cognition. The cognitive enhancement and coordinated, species-specific effects are the biggest scientific leaps.
What the Simian Flu does in the films
In the reboot story described by Gizmodo’s 2017 analysis, researchers develop ALZ-112 as an experimental Alzheimer’s treatment. It improves the cognition of apes and is also tried in one Alzheimer’s patient. A more potent variant, ALZ-113, proves fatal to most humans and escapes the laboratory. Later films depict a global pandemic and a mutated form associated with human speech loss and cognitive decline.
Those are fictional plot events, not clinical findings. To assess plausibility, it helps to separate the claims: a virus infecting more than one species, causing brain effects, spreading between people, and producing sharply different outcomes are distinct biological challenges—not one property.
Could a primate virus infect people and cause a pandemic?
Animal-to-human spillover is real, but an infection in a person does not establish that the virus can spread onward between people. A CDC-hosted review of viral epidemic potential treats human infection, sustained human-to-human transmission, host range, and tissue tropism as separate considerations. Some viruses infect people without reported onward transmission; a virus that reaches human cells may still fail to infect the tissues or follow the route needed for further spread. See the 2016 review in Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Ape-to-human transmission of a simian virus has been documented, but the example is much narrower than the films’ pandemic. A 2007 study in rural Cameroon found simian foamy virus in 7 of 29 people who reported contact with apes (24.1%), compared with 2 of 56 people who reported contact with monkeys (3.6%). The authors describe transmission following ape bites and viral persistence in people. These figures concern a particular virus, study population, and exposure context; they do not show airborne spread, high human mortality, or sustained pandemic transmission. The study is evidence that cross-species infection can occur, not that the Simian Flu’s full scenario is likely.
What scientists assess when judging outbreak potential
The CDC’s Influenza Risk Assessment Tool (IRAT) offers a useful framework for comparing potential threats. It considers properties of the virus, characteristics of the population, and ecological and epidemiological conditions. Relevant factors include:

- Which species and tissues the virus can infect, including receptor binding and host preference.
- How it transmits, and whether there is evidence of sustained human-to-human spread.
- How severe disease is in different hosts and how much immunity people have.
- How often people encounter infected animals and under what conditions.
IRAT is not designed to predict the next pandemic or give a precise risk measurement. Its value here is the discipline of evaluating separate factors rather than treating one real-world analogue as proof of the entire fictional scenario. CDC explains the tool and its limits.
Could a virus make apes smarter?
This is the least supported part of the premise. Viruses can affect brain function, but that broad fact is not evidence that one can safely and predictably improve general intelligence. The film’s treatment would need to produce a beneficial, substantial, and consistent cognitive change across apes—and do so as part of a therapy with other dramatic effects. The sources cited here establish no real analogue for that outcome.

Gizmodo quoted George Church, a biologist at Harvard University’s Wyss Institute, saying, “The word ‘impossible’ is generally avoided in my lab with respect to technologies.” It is a general observation about technological possibility, not a claim that a virus like ALZ-112 or ALZ-113 can be made. The same article characterizes viruses with the films’ complex combination of effects as unlikely to arise naturally. The careful conclusion is that viral intelligence enhancement is speculative, not that a particular future technology has been proven impossible.
Is Alzheimer’s disease infectious?
The fictional treatment should not be taken as evidence that Alzheimer’s disease spreads like flu. The National Institute on Aging says there are no clinical data or evidence showing that Alzheimer’s is infectious in that ordinary sense. Research on amyloid and tau proteins exhibiting prion-like behavior in experimental systems is a separate, limited question; it does not establish routine person-to-person transmission of Alzheimer’s disease. The National Institute on Aging summarizes the distinction.

Which parts are plausible—and which are not?
| Claim | What the evidence supports | How it compares with the films |
|---|---|---|
| A virus crosses from a primate to a person | Documented for simian foamy virus in a rural Cameroon study involving reported ape or monkey contact. | A real but bounded analogue; it does not establish a dangerous or widely spreading disease. |
| A virus spreads sustainably between people | Possible for some viruses, but spillover alone is not evidence of onward transmission. | The films’ global spread requires evidence beyond an animal-to-human infection. |
| A virus changes brain function | Viruses can affect the brain, but that does not demonstrate a safe, reliable improvement in general intelligence. | The apes’ cognitive enhancement has no demonstrated analogue in the sources cited here. |
| A pathogen causes sharply different outcomes by species and later mutation | Host range, tissue tropism, transmission, severity, immunity, and ecology all affect outcomes. | The complete package—human lethality, efficient spread, and selective speech and cognitive loss—is not demonstrated. |
| Alzheimer’s spreads like a cold or flu | The National Institute on Aging says there is no clinical evidence that it does. | The films’ treatment premise does not reflect established evidence about Alzheimer’s disease. |
Verdict: a few real ingredients, one fictional combination
Could a primate virus infect people? Yes, cross-species infection has been documented. Could a virus cause a human pandemic? Some viruses can sustain human transmission, but that is a separate property that spillover does not prove. Could a virus reliably make apes smarter and then produce the films’ sequence of human illness and cognitive effects? The cited evidence offers no demonstrated counterpart. The Simian Flu is therefore not a single plausible prediction; it is a fictional assembly of several biological possibilities, with its most defining effect—predictable intelligence enhancement—remaining speculative.
