Ritchie wrote the film with J. J. Connolly, author of the novel on which it is based. Screen reported that production was underway in London in February 2026.
Is Viva La Madness a Layer Cake sequel?
The answer depends on whether “sequel” refers to the book or the film. In 2013, The Guardian described Connolly’s novel Viva La Madness as a sequel to Layer Cake. That describes the relationship between the novels; it does not establish that the film continues the story of the 2004 Layer Cake movie.

A later Black Bear announcement, reproduced by FilmInk, described the film as a “stand-alone, original film, not a continuation of any previous work.” That characterization applies to the screen adaptation. The novel’s connection to Layer Cake and the film’s stated standalone status are therefore different claims, not a contradiction.
