The hiatus paused new anime broadcasts, not the manga or the franchise.
Why January 11 was a sad day for anime fans
Toei Animation announced that the TV anime would take a break from January through March 2026. That meant there was no new weekly episode on January 11. The official episode archive records episode 1155 on December 28, 2025, followed by episode 1156 on April 5, 2026.

The headline is tied to a date that has passed. At the time, the disappointment was about losing the regular anime broadcast for a few months—not an announcement that One Piece was ending.
What changed in the anime schedule
In its November 7, 2025 announcement, Toei described a new format intended to produce approximately 26 new episodes per year, released in two cours. That is an approximate annual target, not a promise of a particular number of episodes in each cour.

- The world's greatest exposition of the pirates, by the pirates, for the pirates - the Pirates Festival. Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Crew receive an invitation from its host Buena Festa who is known as the Master of Festivities. They arrive to find a venue packed with glamorous pavilions and many pirates including the ones from the Worst Generation. The place is electric.
Toei compared the new approach with what it described as the series’ historical pattern: 11–12 anime episodes adapting around 4–5 manga volumes. Those figures are Toei’s comparison in its announcement, not an independent study of adaptation rates.
| What viewers may notice | Earlier pattern, as described by Toei | Announced format |
|---|---|---|
| Release cadence | Near-weekly broadcasts | Two cours and approximately 26 new episodes per year |
| Adaptation approach | Toei said 11–12 episodes historically adapted around 4–5 manga volumes | Toei said episodes would more closely reflect the manga’s content, rhythm, and pacing |
Toei attributed the explanation to series producer Ryuta Koike, saying that “under the new structure, future episodes will more closely reflect the manga’s content, rhythm, and pacing while continuing to make full use of the creative possibilities offered by animation.” Toei called the change “a strategic decision designed to advance and evolve the series.” These are the studio’s stated aims, not a guarantee that every viewer will prefer the new pace.

When the anime returned
Toei’s January 12, 2026 announcement said the Elbaph Arc would begin airing in Japan on April 5, 2026. The official episode archive likewise lists episode 1156 on that date, after the December 28, 2025 broadcast of episode 1155.

A September 28, 2026 report from GamesRadar said the anime would return in 2027, but that no specific date had been confirmed when the report was published. This is a later development, separate from the January–March 2026 hiatus; it should not be read as confirmation of an exact 2027 return date.
