In the clip described by TV Insider, Ducky talks with Jimmy about Gibbs’s retirement and the peace he found. The available sources do not establish that Harmon filmed new scenes for the episode.
What is Gibbs’s role in the tribute episode?
The Gibbs connection is a memory from an earlier episode, “Face the Strange.” TV Insider reports that “The Stories We Leave Behind” returns to a clip of Ducky speaking with Jimmy about Gibbs’s retirement and the peace Gibbs found. That makes Gibbs the subject of a retrospective conversation, rather than an established present-day participant in the tribute story.
The exact clip, its wording and its release date are not confirmed by the available sources. The report supports the broad context, but not a more detailed reconstruction of the scene.
Does Mark Harmon appear in “The Stories We Leave Behind”?
The sources do not confirm a newly filmed appearance by Mark Harmon as Gibbs. A reference to Gibbs in archival or recalled footage is not evidence that Harmon returned to film scenes for the episode. The safest answer is that the episode’s reported Gibbs connection is retrospective; a new appearance is unverified.

What happens in Ducky’s tribute episode?
“The Stories We Leave Behind” is NCIS Season 21, Episode 2, and honors David McCallum, who played Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard. CBS’s official synopsis says the team mourns Ducky while taking on one of his unfinished cases: a woman’s father was dishonorably discharged from the Marines. Brian Dietzen and Scott Williams wrote the episode, and Michael Zinberg directed it. CBS’s February 1, 2024 announcement gave its original air date as February 19, 2024.
Why does the Gibbs-and-Ducky memory matter?
Their connection was built over years of the series, and CBS’s account of the 400th episode gives it an on-screen origin. “Everything Starts Somewhere” uses flashbacks to show the case that first brought young Gibbs to NCIS and his introduction to a young Ducky, who was new to the United States. Sean Harmon played young Gibbs and Adam Campbell played young Ducky. CBS’s November 13, 2020 release describes that backstory.

That shared history gives Ducky’s reflection on Gibbs’s retirement emotional weight: the clip links a long-running partnership to the idea of Gibbs finding peace after leaving the team. It does not, by itself, establish that Gibbs attends Ducky’s funeral or returns in person.
