| Character | Season and episode context | Death and how it is presented |
|---|---|---|
| Andy Darden | Season 1, episode 1 (the pilot) | Dies in a fire. His death shocks colleagues Matt Casey and Kelly Severide and helps establish the bond between them. |
| Rebecca Jones | Season 2, “Until Your Feet Leave the Ground” | Dies by suicide. The guide describes her as a 51 firefighter and reports that she leaves a note for Gabriela Dawson. |
| Leslie Shay | Season 2 finale; confirmed in the season 3 premiere | She is inside an apartment building when its roof collapses; a beam strikes her head and kills her. The premiere confirms the death in a flashback. |
| Danny Borrelli | Season 4, “Where the Collapse Started” | Dies when debris crumbles; his brother Jimmy tries to save him. The following episode, “Superhero,” honors him. |
| Benny Severide | Season 7, “All the Proof” | Kelly Severide’s father, a retired arson investigator, dies off-screen. The preceding episode is “A Volatile Mixture.” |
| Brian “Otis” Zvonecek | Season 8 premiere | Severely injured in a mattress-factory fire, Otis is taken to hospital by Joe Cruz and dies there with Cruz beside him. |
| Evan Hawkins | Season 11; confirmation comes in the following episode | After going into a burning building to rescue someone, he is gravely injured and dies outside in Violet Mikami’s arms. |
Why Leslie Shay’s death is tied to two episodes
Shay’s death occurs in the season 2 finale, but viewers receive confirmation in the season 3 premiere, which revisits the event in a flashback. That distinction matters when looking up the episode: the finale is where the fatal collapse happens; the premiere confirms what happened to her.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a complete list of every death
The seven entries above are a scoped list of major firefighter and medic deaths, not every death involving every character across the show and its crossovers. A Chicago Fire Wiki deceased-character category displayed 46 items when accessed in 2026, including characters beyond the seven above. It is community-maintained, does not provide a consistent inclusion rule or episode-level verification for the category as a whole, and cannot establish that its list is exhaustive. The available sources therefore do not support calling 46 an authoritative series total.

Episode labels can also differ depending on whether a death occurs on-screen, off-screen, or is confirmed later. The sources summarized here do not provide an episode-by-episode, verified catalog of all deceased characters, including later seasons and crossover appearances. Treat the seven entries as a documented major-death guide rather than a definitive all-character inventory.
