Yorgos Lanthimos’s film turns that implausible premise toward recognizable anxieties about power and the state of the world, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons at its center. Whether it is worth watching depends on your appetite for bleak satire and brutality: one prominent review praised the leads but found the film’s grimness punishing.
What is Bugonia about?
The story begins with two young men convinced that a company CEO is an extraterrestrial threat. They abduct her, believing the kidnapping is a way to stop her from destroying the planet. That is the captors’ conviction, not a premise that should be mistaken for the film endorsing their conspiracy.

Focus Features describes Bugonia as a thriller and dark comedy. The collision between an outlandish plot and a recognizable corporate target gives the story room for suspense as well as satire. Director Yorgos Lanthimos told the Associated Press at Venice that “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional,” adding, “A lot of it is very reflective of the real world.” That comment offers a useful lens on the film’s concerns, but it does not make the conspiracists’ explanation a trustworthy account of events.
How well do Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons work together?
Stone plays the CEO at the center of the kidnapping, while Plemons is one of her captors. That setup gives the leads a tense power struggle to carry: one character has been seized and confined, while the other believes he is acting to save the world. Their performances are the clearest reason to consider the film if you are drawn to actors navigating volatile, morally uneasy material.

- Runtime: 119 minutes
At the Venice premiere, TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek praised Stone and Plemons as gifted performers, while arguing that the brutality and grimness can become punishing. That is one critic’s response, not a universal verdict, but it captures the film’s key trade-off: the intensity that gives the story its pressure may also be what makes it a difficult watch. Stone’s work with Lanthimos here is her fourth collaboration with the director; for Plemons, it is his second, according to the Associated Press.
Is Bugonia a remake?
Yes. Bugonia remakes Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 Korean film Save the Green Planet!, as the Associated Press reported from Venice. That context matters: this is not an original premise invented for Lanthimos’s film, but a new version of an existing story. A useful comparison is to consider how each film handles its conspiracy-driven setup—whether it leans toward comedy, thriller, or horror—and how much weight it gives the captors’ worldview.

Is Bugonia worth watching?
It is a strong choice for viewers who like performances under pressure, unsettling premises, and satire that does not soften its edges. Its kidnapping plot and alien conspiracy provide thriller mechanics, while Lanthimos’s comments point toward a more grounded unease about the real world. But viewers who want a lighter dark comedy, or who find graphic violence and sustained bleakness exhausting, may want to approach it cautiously. Zacharek’s review is a reminder that the film’s harshness is not incidental to every viewer’s experience.

Universal announced digital purchase and rental from November 25, 2025, and 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD releases from December 23, 2025. The 4K UHD edition lists 23 minutes and 3 seconds of bonus material, including “The Birth of the Bees: The Making of Bugonia.” Netflix Tudum’s April 26, 2026 page says “Stream it now”; that dated signal does not establish availability in every country or guarantee that the title remains available later.
