Carrie Underwood’s strongest case as an American Idol judge is not that she has been proven better than Luke Bryan or Lionel Richie. It is that she knows the competition from the contestant’s side: she won season four in 2005, then became the first former contestant to join the judging panel. That experience, paired with a long recording career, gives her a distinctive perspective to bring to the panel.
1. She has been where the contestants are
Underwood won American Idol season four in 2005. When ABC announced her appointment on August 1, 2024, it called her the first Idol alum to join the judging panel. She was announced alongside returning judges Bryan and Richie for the 2025 season, the show’s 23rd season overall. Disney/ABC Press announcement
That history gives her a direct point of reference for what contestants face: performing under pressure, trying to interpret judges’ reactions, and hoping for a chance to continue. It does not guarantee that every piece of advice she gives will be right, but it is a perspective neither of the other two judges shares as a former contestant.
2. She can remember how confusing feedback can feel
In an ABC Audio report published March 7, 2025, Underwood described the uncertainty of choosing a song and trying to understand a judge’s criticism. She said she hoped to bring “a different perspective to this show” because she knew what it was like to be there. ABC Audio, March 7, 2025

Her example points to a practical strength: she can explain not just whether a performance worked for her, but why song choice or delivery may not be serving a contestant. Bryan offered a glimpse of the challenge on the other side of the desk, saying Underwood initially found it hard to tell hopefuls they would not advance because she was so kind. That comment suggests empathy is part of her approach, while also showing that judging sometimes requires a difficult no. ABC Audio, March 7, 2025
3. Her contestant experience is backed by a substantial music career
Underwood is not relying on her season-four win alone. ABC’s current American Idol biography, accessed in 2026, reports more than 85 million records sold worldwide, 29 No. 1 singles—14 of them co-written—and eight Grammy Awards. ABC also lists seven RIAA-certified platinum or multiplatinum albums and more than 72 million total RIAA certifications.

Those are credentials for a working recording artist with extensive experience in performance and music-making. They do not measure judging skill or establish that she is more qualified than Bryan or Richie; they help explain why contestants might take her perspective seriously.
4. She can speak to a possible path after the show
Underwood’s season-four victory became the start of a sustained career. ABC’s announcement described her win as launching that career, while its current biography documents her recording, touring, television work, and book. Her own path gives her concrete experience to draw on when talking with hopefuls about what can follow the competition.

It is an example, not a promise. A successful career after Idol cannot guarantee the same outcome for another contestant, and the show’s winner is not the only person who can build a future in music. The value is that Underwood can discuss the transition from competing on the program to working as an artist.
5. She adds a different lens to an accomplished panel
Bryan and Richie bring extensive careers of their own. ABC’s biographies report 30 No. 1 hits for Bryan and more than 125 million albums sold worldwide, along with four Grammy Awards, for Richie. Bryan’s ABC biography · Richie’s ABC biography

Richie has also emphasized that reaching Hollywood can matter even for contestants who do not win, framing the experience as a source of pride for families. That is a different but valuable way to look at the competition. Underwood’s particular contribution is the added perspective of someone who once stood in front of the judges herself. ABC’s August 25, 2025 announcement said Underwood, Bryan, and Richie would return for the 2026 season, identified as season nine on ABC and season 24 overall. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “better” means here
There is no cited measure comparing these judges’ accuracy, influence on contestants’ outcomes, or audience popularity. Calling Underwood categorically better would go beyond what the available evidence shows. The more defensible argument is that she brings a distinctive combination of former-contestant experience and a successful recording career to a panel whose other members have substantial music credentials of their own.
