Instead, it makes that question part of her work: her editor wants a reassuring epilogue for her novel, while Carrie doubts that a heroine ending up alone is automatically a tragic one. The episode’s most interesting idea is stronger than its pacing, which several critics found underwhelming.
What happens in “Forget About the Boy”?
Season 3, episode 11 was released on Aug. 7, 2025, with the season finale scheduled for Aug. 14. The 12-episode season’s official schedule and premise are listed by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Carrie’s editor praises her historical novel but asks her to add an epilogue that will leave readers feeling good. The heroine’s current ending leaves her alone after the death of the love of her life. Carrie resists the implication that this outcome must be sad. She eventually writes an epilogue in which the heroine receives an invitation to a party and becomes curious about meeting a widower. It offers possibility, not a guarantee of romance—and it does not settle what Carrie herself wants.
That uncertainty runs through Carrie’s surroundings, too. Her former apartment has changed since Lisette moved in, while the large house Carrie bought with a future with Aidan in mind feels empty after both Aidan and Duncan are gone. The spaces make her question feel concrete: is she missing a partner, a home she once imagined, or a version of her life that no longer exists?

Does Carrie need a happily ever after?
The episode’s strongest thematic choice is to separate fulfillment from coupledom. Carrie’s editor is not simply asking for a happy ending; the request assumes that readers need romantic hope to feel satisfied. Carrie’s objection opens a more interesting possibility: a woman can be alone without being diminished, even if she remains open to love.
Her epilogue lands between a clean rejection of romance and a conventional pairing-off. The heroine may meet someone, but the story stops before that possibility becomes a promise. That distinction matters. Carrie is willing to leave the door open without declaring that partnership is the only acceptable destination. The episode raises the question of whether Carrie will stay single, but leaves the answer for the series finale.

How the other storylines shape the episode
The episode moves among several relationships and expectations, giving its question about fulfillment an ensemble frame.
- Charlotte and Rock: Charlotte is moved by Rock’s performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie and wrestles with her own expectations.
- Miranda, Brady, and Mia: Miranda invites Mia, Brady’s child’s mother, to Thanksgiving without first consulting Brady.
- Anthony and Giuseppe: Anthony accepts Giuseppe’s proposal, then confides that he has doubts.
- Seema and Adam: The two move toward meeting family.
- Harry and Charlotte: After his cancer diagnosis, Harry wants a more intimate Thanksgiving.
These threads contrast different forms of commitment, family, and uncertainty. But the episode’s short, split-feeling structure gives them limited room to build momentum alongside Carrie’s book storyline.

Does the episode work as a penultimate chapter?
Its thematic ambition and its execution do not quite match. The novel gives Carrie a useful mirror, and the empty house adds emotional weight to her uncertainty. Yet the episode spreads attention across multiple unresolved threads just before the finale, so its ideas can feel more like setup than development.
That gap is reflected in individual critical responses, not a settled consensus. Writing for ELLE on Aug. 7, 2025, Erica Gonzales called the episode bland and wondered whether material had been divided between it and the finale: ELLE’s review. Rotten Tomatoes lists two critic reviews on its episode page; the displayed entries include an A.V. Club grade of B- and a Vulture rating of 2/5, with Vulture criticizing the episode’s lack of plot: Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing. Those are a small set of different evaluations, not evidence of broad critical agreement.

Why the finale context matters
Episode 11 aired as the second-to-last chapter of a season that was also the series’ last. On Aug. 1, 2025, ABC reported that showrunner Michael Patrick King had announced the show would end after season three, with a two-part finale; King said he reached the decision while writing the final episode. His statement of thanks to viewers concerned the series ending, not this episode’s quality: ABC News’ report.
That context makes “Forget About the Boy” feel deliberately unfinished. Carrie’s book has a tentative opening toward a new connection, while her own future remains undecided. Whether the finale can make that ambiguity feel like a genuine choice rather than a pause is the question the episode leaves behind.
