Spoilers for High Potential Season 2, Episode 8, “The One That Got Away: Part Two.”
Rhys Eastman returns, and Morgan’s suspicion that he is art thief Jean Baptiste proves right: she finds him with a stolen Rembrandt. The harder question is what she does next. By letting him go so he can return the painting to the family it was taken from during the Holocaust, Morgan puts restitution ahead of police procedure—and risks the trust of her team. That conflict gives the episode a sharper hook than its missing-painting mystery alone.

What happens in “The One That Got Away: Part Two”?
ABC lists “The One That Got Away: Part Two” as Season 2, Episode 8, with a displayed date of January 7, 2026. TVLine and TheWrap identify the episode as the January 6 midseason premiere; the sources do not explain the date difference. ABC’s episode listing says the case involves Roman’s missing backpack, while episode coverage focuses on the murder investigation and the stolen Rembrandt.
Spoilers: The LAPD investigates the murder of museum director Cyrus as Morgan fixates on Rhys, played by Aiden Turner. The Fosters, owners of the painting, had supplied the museum with a forgery and kept the original while working with Cyrus to collect insurance money. When they suspected Cyrus wanted a share of the scheme for himself, they killed him. Police catch the Fosters as they try to escape by yacht, but the original Rembrandt is gone.

Morgan recognizes a scar associated with Jean Baptiste and waits for Rhys on shore. She finds him with the painting. Rhys says he intends to return it to its rightful owner: an older woman whose family owned it before they were killed in the Holocaust. Morgan lets him leave. The episode’s central turn is therefore not simply that the art thief was there; it is that Morgan knowingly chooses not to arrest him.
Why does Morgan let Rhys escape?
The decision turns on competing ideas of justice. Rhys has stolen the Rembrandt, but his stated purpose is to restore it to a family whose history gives the theft a different moral context. Morgan acts on that restitution motive rather than following the usual path of arrest and recovery through the police.

That does not make her choice procedurally uncomplicated. Morgan withholds the truth from her team and lets a suspect walk away with evidence. Showrunner Todd Harthan told TheWrap that the writers treated it as an exceptional case: “You really have to build the right story and earn it,” he said, noting that the show usually catches people who have harmed someone and are dangerous. He said this case felt as if it belonged in its own category. In a separate interview with TVLine, Harthan said, “I have no regrets,” while acknowledging that the choice was debated in the writers’ room.
The story’s strongest tension is between Morgan’s confidence in her own judgment and the trust her job depends on. The moral case for returning the painting is legible; the cost of secretly overriding the team’s process is also real. The episode leaves room to question whether Morgan has earned the right to make that call on her own.

What Rhys’s return means for the team
The missing Rembrandt remains an unresolved problem for the squad, and Morgan’s decision draws Captain Nick Wagner’s suspicion. Harthan told TheWrap that mistrust would shape the rest of Season 2. The episode thus resolves the immediate question of who took the painting while leaving a consequential one behind: how much can Morgan’s colleagues rely on what she tells them?
Karadec’s response is also framed as concern about Morgan and the unknowns around Wagner, rather than as confirmed jealousy. Harthan described Wagner as an enigma whose motives would be unpacked over the season. That keeps the episode’s interpersonal fallout focused on uncertainty and trust, not a simple rivalry.

Rhys may return, but that is not confirmed. Harthan told TVLine he sees the character as an unfinished thread; that is a showrunner’s indication of possibility, not a guarantee of a future appearance. Harthan also said Morgan is unlikely to dwell on her decision immediately. CinemaBlend reported his separate tease that Morgan’s difficulty with direct lying could matter later, but that, too, is not confirmation of a specific plot outcome.
