These ten films approach September 11 and its consequences from different angles: the hijacked flights, rescue and survival, grief, New York after the attacks, and the government response that followed. They are an editorial selection, not an objective ranking—and most are dramatizations, not documentaries. Streaming availability varies by country and date; only the options noted below have specific availability evidence.
How to choose a film about 9/11
Some films reconstruct events or tell stories based on real people; others use fiction to explore bereavement, identity, or policy. That distinction matters: a film can be useful for understanding a perspective without being a complete or neutral account of the history. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) groups these works as films about 9/11 and its consequences, including both fictional and fact-inspired stories: CFR’s guide to movies about 9/11.

The list below is organized around what each film can help viewers consider, rather than ranked by quality. It includes two distinct stories about Flight 93 only if details can be responsibly established; here, only United 93 is included because the available sources do not verify the television film Flight 93.
Films about the attacks and rescue
1. United 93 (2006)
Directed by Paul Greengrass, this drama follows passengers and crew confronting the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93. CFR says the film’s reconstruction draws on known flight-path information, air-traffic-control communications, passenger calls, and interviews with families. The intended target of the flight is not known with certainty, a point worth keeping in mind when watching a dramatization of events whose final moments remain partly uncertain.

Universal lists a runtime of 1 hour 51 minutes and an R rating for language and intense sequences of terror and violence. Its catalog confirms digital rental and purchase, plus 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions; it does not confirm a subscription streaming service. Check the Universal Pictures film page for current purchase and edition details.
2. World Trade Center (2006)
Oliver Stone’s film centers on Port Authority police officers John McLoughlin and Will Jimeno, who became trapped after entering the World Trade Center complex. It offers a first-responder survival perspective rather than a broad account of the attacks. The focus is on the men underground and the people hoping to find them, so expect an intimate rescue story rather than a comprehensive historical survey.
Films about grief and life after the attacks
3. Reign Over Me (2007)
This fictional drama follows Charlie Fineman, who lost his wife and daughters in the attacks, and Alan, a former friend who tries to reconnect with him. Its subject is the difficulty of living with traumatic loss and isolation, not the mechanics of 9/11 itself. CFR includes it among films about the consequences of the attacks.
Rank #2
4. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)
Directed by Stephen Daldry and adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, the film follows Oskar Schell after his father dies in the World Trade Center collapse. Oskar’s search gives the story a child’s perspective on loss and the need to make meaning from it; it is a fictional narrative, not a documentary account.

Rental and purchase listings included Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Fandango At Home, and Spectrum On Demand. Availability changes, so confirm the listing in your location at JustWatch’s U.S. title page before watching.
5. Remember Me (2010)
This title appears among the candidates associated with the original headline, but the available sources here do not establish enough detail to give a dependable synopsis or current viewing option. It is therefore not included as one of the ten recommendations in this guide.
Rank #3
5. The 25th Hour (2002)
Set in New York in the aftermath of the attacks, this film is a post-9/11 city story rather than a dramatization of the day itself. Its inclusion broadens the list beyond rescue narratives and stories about bereaved families. The available sources do not verify current streaming availability.
Films about identity and the wider consequences
6. The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012)
CFR describes a Pakistani immigrant whose life in the United States changes after 9/11, before the story returns to Lahore. It brings a perspective beyond New York-centered experiences and considers how the attacks altered the way a person is seen and treated. It is a fictional story, not a documentary record of one person’s experience.

Films about compensation and government policy
7. Worth (2020)
Michael Keaton plays attorney Kenneth Feinberg, who administered the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. The film focuses on the difficult work of assigning monetary compensation and the disagreements families faced over how losses could be valued. It is a dramatization, not a documentary account of the fund’s administration.
CFR reported in 2021 that the fund distributed more than $7 billion over nearly three years. Feinberg acknowledged the film’s interpretive choices, saying, “There’s a certain dramatic license that they play in the film.” Read CFR’s context in its film guide.
8. The Report (2019)
This political drama follows the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the CIA’s detention and interrogation program and the destruction of interrogation videotapes. It extends the subject from the attacks to the government’s post-9/11 response. Viewers should distinguish the film’s dramatized presentation from a documentary treatment of the investigation.
9. Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Kathryn Bigelow’s film dramatizes the post-9/11 hunt for Osama bin Laden. CFR notes the controversy over its depiction of torture and the CIA’s cooperation during production. It is best approached as a contested dramatic account of the manhunt, not a neutral documentary explanation of intelligence work.
Where to stream these movies
Streaming rights change, and availability differs between countries and access types. The one dated listing available here is for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close in the United States. Universal confirms digital rental or purchase and physical editions for United 93, but not a subscription service. CFR’s September 2021 platform notes for several films—including Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Peacock for United 93—are historical and should not be treated as current listings.
- Check the title’s listing in your country before planning to watch.
- Confirm whether the option is subscription, free with ads, rental, or purchase.
- For a film tied closely to real events, look for a reliable historical account alongside the dramatization.
The original title associated with this topic also names Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore’s documentary, and the separate television movie Flight 93. The sources available for this guide do not verify current viewing options or sufficient details for a full capsule on those titles, so they are not presented as streaming recommendations. Do not confuse Flight 93 with Greengrass’s United 93.
