Jimmy Kimmel has considered leaving late night, but he has not announced a retirement or a final decision. In an August 2026 podcast conversation, he explained why he feels less inclined to go: he sees Jimmy Kimmel Live! as an outlet for viewers upset by current events and feels some responsibility to them. That purpose competes with genuine reasons to stop, including the demands of the job and his wish for more time away from television.
Why Kimmel first said he might be nearing the end
The speculation traces to a February 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times, published as Kimmel prepared to host the Oscars. He said, “I think this is my final contract,” but also acknowledged that he had thought that before and later changed his mind. At the time, he said he had more than two years remaining on his contract. That was a tentative reflection, not a retirement announcement, and the contract timing has since changed.
Kimmel described the strain more specifically than simple boredom: making the show takes long hours and substantial work. Breaks could remind him that he missed the enjoyable parts, too. He also wanted room for interests beyond television, including cooking, drawing and learning sculpture. Thinking about plans he might never get to, in light of memories of his grandfather, made the prospect melancholy.
In the same interview, Kimmel spoke about his son Billy’s open-heart surgery shortly after birth and said the family remained mindful of another surgery. That is context he shared in 2024, not a report of a new medical development.

Why he now feels less inclined to retire
In an August 2026 conversation on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Kimmel described a new reason to keep going. As quoted by LateNighter, he said: “now I feel like… this show is an outlet for people who are outraged by what’s going on, and I feel some responsibility to those people.” He characterized that responsibility as a reason beyond money.
The distinction matters: Kimmel did not say that the work had become easy or that he had stopped wanting time away. He said the show’s value to viewers had changed how he thought about leaving. His comments frame the decision as a pull between personal time and a sense that the program serves an audience.

How Molly McNearney sees the trade-off
McNearney, Kimmel’s wife and the show’s executive producer, expressed both sides of the decision in the podcast conversation. TV Insider reported her saying, “I would be happy to be done with the show and end it in a great way and do my own next thing.” She also said she wanted Kimmel to be able to relax, while regarding his voice as important at the moment.

Reports in September and October 2026 describe uncertainty and discussions about the show’s future, not a confirmed renewal or ending. TheWrap reported talks. Disney president and chief creative officer Dana Walden described late night as “a very challenging daypart,” while also praising Kimmel’s work and noting that ratings were up relative to a smaller broadcast late-night audience, as reported by The Daily Beast. Those business comments are not an announcement about Kimmel’s plans.
