Spoilers for episode 7, “The Black Spot.” In It: Welcome to Derry, Pennywise is a useful disguise, not a form the creature chooses for symbolic reasons: It sees that children are captivated by circus performer Bob Gray’s clown act, kills him, and takes over his identity. Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs explained the appeal: “What IT saw was someone who absolutely mesmerized little kids. For a creature whose whole thing is eating kids, that’s a pretty attractive proposition.” (SYFY Wire)
Why does Pennywise take Bob Gray’s form?
Because Gray’s Pennywise act makes it easier for It to get close to children. The series presents the creature’s choice as practical predation: It recognizes that children are drawn to the performer, then appropriates his identity and clown persona as an effective lure. The explanation comes from Fuchs’s account of what It saw in Gray, rather than from an established supernatural or symbolic reason for the clown’s appearance.
Was Bob Gray a real person in the series?
Yes. Episode 7 depicts Bob Gray as a human, widowed traveling-circus performer who entertains children as Pennywise. He disappears one night, and the entity later uses his identity. Gray’s daughter, Ingrid Kersh, believes the Pennywise she encounters is her missing father. The resulting tragedy is that she mistakes the creature wearing his identity for the man she lost. (Esquire)
The reveal is woven into the episode’s Black Spot story, which draws on one of the novel’s interludes. Ingrid’s connection to Bob and her belief about Pennywise add a twist to that adaptation. (TV Insider)

Was Bob Gray Pennywise before It took his form?
No: the series distinguishes the human performer from the creature that takes over his identity. Bob performs as Pennywise; It sees how well the act attracts children and adopts the persona. That distinction matters because the clown identity belongs first to Gray in this version of the story, while the predatory creature makes it its own.
What does the series add to Stephen King’s novel?
| Version | What it establishes about Bob Gray |
|---|---|
| Stephen King’s novel It | It uses the name “Mr. Bob Gray, also known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown,” but the book does not provide the human biography or explain Gray’s connection to the clown. (Television Academy) |
| It: Welcome to Derry | Gray is a human circus performer with a daughter, Ingrid; the creature takes his identity and clown persona. This is the series’ interpretation, not a backstory established in the novel. |
That gap in the book helped inspire the series. Andy Muschietti described the original question behind the idea: “Wouldn’t it be great to make a movie about the origin of Pennywise, and how did it become the clown, and who the fuck was this cryptic character, Bob Gray?” The Television Academy interview also quotes Barbara Muschietti saying King “reads the scripts and he watches the episodes — and he does it with curiosity and excitement.” Her description of his response does not mean King wrote or co-created the series’ Bob Gray backstory. What does the Bob Gray reveal leave unanswered?
The episode explains why It found Gray’s clown persona useful, but it does not resolve every part of the origin. A report on Fuchs’s comments identifies open questions about what happened to Bob after he went into the woods, whether his body was recovered, and where the child-shaped manifestation that lured him came from. Those points remain unanswered in the account of the reveal; the episode’s explanation does not establish what happened. (ComicBook.com)
