That makes “AI-supported project” a better-supported description than a conventional band of identified performers. The people behind it and the exact production process have not been established in the cited coverage.
Is The Velvet Sundown a real band?
It is real as a music project and release identity, but the available reporting does not substantiate a lineup of human performers behind it. Berklee reported that the project confirmed on July 3, 2025, that it was “a synthetic music project guided by human creative direction.” Berklee’s account quotes the project’s reported Spotify profile.
That description points to AI support and human creative direction, not to a fully autonomous machine and not to a proven roster of human musicians. The sources do not identify the people directing the project or provide a complete account of how its tracks were made. “Ghost band” is a useful shorthand for the mystery around its performers, not a formal classification or proof that no human writers, producers, or operators were involved.
How did the controversy unfold?
Music releases and growing attention
The Velvet Sundown released music on streaming platforms in June 2025. Berklee’s account says two albums appeared that month; the reporting does not establish physical editions. The Guardian reported that the project passed one million Spotify streams in a matter of weeks, a historical total rather than a current count. The Guardian’s July 2025 coverage describes its rapid rise.

Suspicion and conflicting claims
Before the project’s confirmation, listeners questioned whether the music and imagery were AI-generated. Public accounts associated with the project disputed AI involvement, while a person claiming to represent the band gave contradictory accounts. Those earlier statements should not be conflated with the project’s later self-description. Fast Company’s coverage recounts the suspicion and dispute.
Rolling Stone reported that a purported spokesperson initially gave conflicting explanations, acknowledged some songs generated with Suno, and was later reported to have said he was hoaxing the media. That account is disputed attribution, not definitive evidence of the project’s full workflow. It does not establish that every track was made with Suno or that Suno had an official relationship with The Velvet Sundown. Rolling Stone’s report details the changing claims.
The project’s confirmation
Berklee dates the project’s confirmation to July 3, 2025; Swedish broadcaster SVT reported it the next day. SVT’s July 4 account put the project at about 800,000 monthly Spotify listeners at that time. Monthly listeners are a dated snapshot of audience reach, not the same measure as the Guardian’s cumulative stream count. SVT’s report provides its date and figure.
Euronews reported that The Velvet Sundown’s Spotify biography was revised to acknowledge the AI-generated nature of the music. This describes the profile as reported in July 2025, not its current wording. Euronews’ coverage recounts the profile change and controversy.

What did The Velvet Sundown say it was trying to do?
In a July 5, 2025, post, the project described itself as an artistic provocation about authorship, identity, and music in the age of AI, according to Exclaim!. That framing makes the uncertainty around who made the music part of the project’s subject, but it does not reveal the creators’ identities or settle the production details. Exclaim!’s report describes the post.
