The Rock said he stepped back from WrestleMania 41’s closing plans so John Cena and Cody Rhodes could remain the focus. He also described discussing creative ideas with Triple H, including Cena’s turn. Backstage reports did not confirm a rift between the two; they said any issues had not become known to the locker room.
What The Rock said about stepping back
In an April 22, 2025 appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, The Rock said he had been asked to appear at Elimination Chamber and had discussed creative ideas with Triple H. A recap of the interview by ProWrestling.net attributes to him the account that Triple H proposed turning John Cena, and that he supported the idea.
“And Triple H says, ‘What about this, what about John turning? I said I love it, I love it.” The Rock said he later concluded that the Final Boss should not be involved in the WrestleMania finish, so attention could go to Cena and Rhodes. He described offering to be there if needed while saying it was best for him not to take part in that finish.
That is The Rock’s public explanation, as relayed by the interview recap—not independent confirmation of every private discussion or decision. He also said he liked the match finish, though he would have handled parts of the build differently. In discussing the time available to build the match, he characterized it as “six weeks”; that is his description, not an independently measured statistic.

What happened at WrestleMania 41
WWE’s official WrestleMania 41 results list John Cena as defeating Cody Rhodes in the Undisputed WWE Championship match. The result gives context to The Rock’s explanation: he said he wanted the attention on the two wrestlers competing for the title rather than on his own involvement.
The interview recap also attributes to The Rock a reference to Cena’s “17” title wins. That figure is his wording in the recap, not a separate count established here.

Did The Rock and Triple H have a creative falling-out?
The cited reporting does not establish that they did. Fightful reported on May 5, 2025, that talent it contacted had heard speculation, but that any issues had not become known to the locker room. WrestleTalk’s April 25 summary likewise said talent did not report known problems between them.
Those accounts describe what the outlets’ sources knew; they cannot rule out a private disagreement. The evidence supports treating a Rock–Triple H rift as unresolved speculation, not a verified feud. The Rock’s account of discussing ideas with Triple H, including Cena’s turn, is consistent with collaboration, but it does not settle whether they disagreed over other parts of the story.

What the “backlash” claim does—and does not—show
The available sources do not provide a survey, audience-reaction measurement, or other sourced statistic that quantifies backlash to WrestleMania 41’s story or finish. The word describes the reaction framing around the story; it should not be read as a measured scale of fan sentiment.
For readers looking for WWE programming, WWE lists WWE Network, Netflix, Sony LIV, and Flow among viewing routes for its content. That general listing does not confirm WrestleMania 41 availability in every country, so check the service and local catalog in your region.
