The Battle of the Southlands in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power looks like a familiar fantasy rescue: a threatened community faces an Orc assault, then Númenórean reinforcements arrive. But “Udûn,” Season 1, Episode 6, turns that apparent victory into catastrophe. The Orcs divert water into a volcano, whose eruption destroys the Southlands and reveals the land as Mordor. The episode subverts the expected payoff of a heroic battle—not Tolkien’s whole moral framework or every convention the series uses.
Which battle does the title refer to?
It is the Battle of the Southlands in “Udûn,” the sixth episode of Season 1, which aired September 30, 2022. The episode follows Adar’s army as it marches on Ostirith. Its title has Tolkien connections: “Udûn” is associated with a valley in northern Mordor and with Morgoth’s stronghold, also called Utumno, as Den of Geek notes in its episode review.
The battle is presented in successive waves rather than as a single uninterrupted clash. Orc-led attacks put the Southlanders under pressure; the arrival of Galadriel, Isildur, Elendil and Númenórean forces brings a counterattack and a dramatic shift in the fighting. That structure supplies the familiar ingredients of a last-minute rescue, as the episode’s battle breakdown describes.
How does the episode subvert the heroic-rescue payoff?
Reinforcements change the immediate battle
The Númenórean arrival gives the Southlanders a chance to fight back. For a moment, the battle follows a recognizable heroic pattern: a besieged group holds out until help turns the tide. But the military reversal is only temporary relief, not a restoration of the community’s safety or home.

The cost falls on the Southlands themselves
After the fighting, Adar claims that he has killed Sauron. The more consequential turn comes through the Orcs’ plan: they have built trenches to channel water toward a simmering volcano. The water triggers an eruption, covering the previously vibrant Southlands in ash and flame. Amazon’s official Season 1 recap describes the mechanism and its devastation.
The apparent victory ends in transformation
As the ash dims the daylight, the episode reveals the Southlands as Mordor—the future home of Sauron and his forces. The battle therefore does not end with a community restored to safety. Its landscape and identity are remade into the setting associated with the enemy’s power. That reversal is the episode’s clearest twist: surviving the battlefield is not the same as saving the world the characters live in.

What does this change about the meaning of victory?
The episode separates winning a fight from protecting the people and place for which it was fought. The Númenórean counterattack can count as a tactical rescue in the moment, yet it cannot prevent the larger disaster. By ending with the Southlands’ destruction and renaming, “Udûn” makes victory feel incomplete and costly rather than cleanly triumphant.
This reading should stay specific to the battle’s payoff. The episode uses recognizable fantasy-war conventions—a threatened settlement, escalating attacks and arriving reinforcements—before redirecting their expected result. It does not establish that the series rejects Tolkien’s storytelling patterns wholesale. TIME’s review of the series, for example, argues that it relies on familiar Tolkien plots and archetypes. The Second Age itself is sketched in the appendices to The Return of the King, a source context that helps explain why the show can both draw on established lore and alter the dramatic emphasis of a particular episode.

How was “Udûn” received?
Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displayed an 87% Tomatometer based on 30 reviews when accessed in 2026; that score and review count are a snapshot and may change. Its critics’ consensus called the episode “some of the most rollicking action ever witnessed on television” and “The Rings of Power’s most conventionally satisfying episode yet.” The wording belongs to Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus, not to an individual critic. Read the episode page for its current listing.
That praise and the episode’s subversion are not contradictory. The action can be conventionally satisfying in its pacing and counterattack while the ending refuses the usual emotional restoration. The battle feels like a rescue; the final reveal makes clear how little that rescue secured.
