Galadriel works out that his claim to the Southlands throne is false, confronts him, and refuses his invitation to rule beside him. Meanwhile, Celebrimbor forges three Elven Rings, and the Stranger—mistaken by the acolytes for Sauron—is revealed as an Istar, or wizard. The episode’s question, “What Will You Choose to Be?”, fits both revelations, though it is not verified episode dialogue.
What happens in “Alloyed”?
Season 1’s finale opens with a deliberate false lead. The acolytes who have been pursuing the Stranger find him and say they have come to serve Sauron. For a moment, their certainty appears to settle the season’s other identity mystery. It does not: the Stranger rejects the identity they assign him and fights back.
The episode then turns to Galadriel’s growing doubts about Halbrand. His advice about power—and the knowledge he has shared with Celebrimbor—leads her to investigate the Southlands royal line. The story Halbrand gave her does not hold up: the line had ended long before, so he cannot be the returning king he claimed to be.
Who is Halbrand really?
Halbrand is Sauron. Galadriel confronts him after discovering the falsehood behind his claim to the Southlands throne. He tries to persuade her to join him, presenting the prospect of ruling together. She refuses, and he leaves.

This is the finale’s central reveal, not a theory left open for viewers to solve. It also recasts Halbrand’s earlier relationship with Galadriel: the man she helped bring back to power in the Southlands was the enemy she had been searching for.
Why does Celebrimbor forge three rings?
In Lindon, Celebrimbor completes three rings for the Elves. The proposed crown gives way to three separate objects made with the mithril shard. Within the episode’s story, their purpose is to help the Elves withstand their diminishing. They are presented as the first three of the eventual Rings of Power, forged before the One Ring.

The finale’s ring-making belongs to this television adaptation. Its order of creation and Sauron’s role should not be treated as a complete explanation of Tolkien’s source lore: the episode feature discusses the Three’s relationship to Sauron’s influence, while the on-screen outcome here is that Celebrimbor has made three Elven Rings.
Is the Stranger Sauron—or Gandalf?
The Stranger is not Sauron. The acolytes mistake him for the Dark Lord, but the finale identifies him as an Istar, the term for a wizard. His personal name remains unknown at the end of the episode.

Nori chooses to leave the Harfoots and travel with him to Rhûn, where they hope to learn more about who he is and what he is meant to do. A familiar-sounding “follow your nose” moment may invite viewers to think of Gandalf, but the finale does not name the Stranger as Gandalf. The distinction matters: the episode answers what kind of being he is, not his individual identity.
What happens to Sadoc?
Sadoc does not survive the acolytes’ attack. His death leaves the Harfoots grieving as Nori departs with the Stranger, making the journey toward Rhûn a farewell as well as a new beginning.

What does the finale’s question mean?
“What Will You Choose to Be?” is a useful thematic frame for the episode, not a verified quotation from it. Galadriel refuses Sauron’s offer, choosing not to become his partner; the Stranger rejects the identity imposed on him by the acolytes; and Nori chooses to leave the familiar life of the Harfoots for an uncertain road. The question connects those choices without erasing their different stakes.
In a post-finale interview, co-showrunner Patrick McKay said, “Obviously Sauron is now a chess piece on the board.” He described the wider story the showrunners intended to tell as including the forging of the Rings of Power, Sauron’s rise, Númenor’s fall, and the Last Alliance. That is their stated series plan, rather than confirmation of every later plot detail.
