Private Practice ended after its 13-episode sixth season because creator Shonda Rhimes, ABC, and the studio agreed the series had reached its finish line. Rhimes announced the decision on October 19, 2012. Kate Walsh’s planned departure was part of the context, but the available reporting does not establish that it alone caused the show to end—or that low ratings were ABC’s stated reason.
What ABC decided
ABC ordered 13 episodes for Private Practice’s sixth season. On October 19, 2012, Rhimes announced that the series would conclude after episode 6.13. Contemporary coverage reported that ABC did not order the remaining nine episodes that would have extended the season.

ABC confirmed the series would end after the current season, according to TheWrap’s report from October 19, 2012. TVLine also reported Rhimes’s announcement and the 13-episode endpoint in its October 19 coverage.
What Shonda Rhimes said about the ending
Rhimes described the ending as a joint decision made after discussion. As quoted by Us Weekly, she said: “There was a lot of discussion and debate but, in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line.” The statement presents the conclusion as an agreement among Rhimes, ABC, and the studio, rather than identifying one single cause. Us Weekly reported the statement.

Did Kate Walsh’s departure cause the cancellation?
Walsh announced in June 2012 that she planned to leave after the first 13 episodes of season six. At the time, ABC had ordered those 13 episodes, but the network had not announced that the series itself would end. CBS News reported both details in its June 13, 2012 report.
That timeline makes Walsh’s departure relevant context, but it does not prove it was the sole reason the series ended. The later account from Rhimes describes a decision reached with the network and studio; the contemporary reporting does not establish that the show would have continued if Walsh had stayed.

Was it cancelled because of low ratings?
The sources documenting the ending do not identify low ratings as ABC’s stated reason. The firm explanation is narrower: the sixth season was limited to 13 episodes, and Rhimes said she, ABC, and the studio agreed the series had reached its end. Without a reported ratings rationale, attributing the decision to low ratings would go beyond what these accounts establish.
