The Censored Game of Thrones on Indian TV Was Better Than You Think

Indian television edits changed more than the profanity in Game of Thrones. Writer Supriya Sharma argued that the Iron Throne struggle remained compelling despite the cuts.

Indian television’s edited Game of Thrones was not the same experience as an uncut version: reported broadcasts trimmed or reframed sexual and violent scenes and softened some subtitle wording. Yet writer Supriya Sharma argued that the central fight for the Iron Throne remained compelling despite those changes. That is a critical judgment, not a verdict shared by every viewer—and the available accounts do not establish one definitive cut for every season or platform.

Was Game of Thrones censored on Indian television?

Yes. In a 2017 account of watching reruns, Supriya Sharma described Indian television edits that removed or reframed sexual and violent material. She also noted subtitle substitutions that softened language: “sex” became “intercourse,” “arse” became “backside,” and “rape” became “violate.” These are examples from her viewing, not a complete episode-by-episode inventory.

Sharma cited scenes involving Jaime and Cersei, Daenerys after the birth of her dragons, Theon’s torture and castration, Oberyn’s death, Ros’s murder, and Jaime and Cersei beside Joffrey’s body. The examples show why “censored” means more than a beep over profanity: a cut or reframing can change what viewers see, while softened subtitles alter how dialogue lands. Hindustan Times, 2017

What did the broadcaster say was edited?

In 2015, Monica Tata, then managing director of HBO India, said the broadcaster self-regulated the show to make it suitable for television consumption and meet regulatory requirements. She said, “We take great care to ensure that the plot continuity and story line are maintained.” Tata also characterized the amount removed as “no more than a couple of minutes” for a show such as Game of Thrones. Those are the broadcaster’s claims in that 2015 context—not an independent runtime audit, a season-by-season total, or evidence of a specific regulator ordering particular cuts. Why the cuts could change the story’s feel

Continuity and context are not quite the same thing. A viewer may still understand the next plot event after a scene is shortened, while losing a visual or emotional detail that helps explain a character’s conduct. Sharma’s examples support that concern, but her account is a critical interpretation of what she watched rather than a frame-by-frame comparison of every broadcast version.

That distinction also helps explain the title’s counterintuitive claim. Sharma said the edited series still held her interest because the political struggle for the Iron Throne remained engaging. The argument is not that cuts improved every scene, or that all viewers would prefer the television edit; it is that the show’s central conflict could survive an imperfect presentation.

How Indian viewers encountered different versions

The version depended in part on where and when viewers watched. For the season-seven launch in 2017, India Today reported that Hotstar Premium would stream the episode from 7:30 a.m. on July 17, while Star World planned to premiere the censored television version on July 18 at 11 p.m.; Star World HD was also listed for the TV airing. These are historical schedule details, not current service or catalog guidance. India Today, 14 July 2017

Later reports show why it is risky to treat any single description as a complete account of the series. Coverage of the 2019 season-eight premiere described partial censorship of the discovery of young Lord Ned Umber’s body and quoted a viewer who preferred the fuller version to Star World’s edit. That report concerns the premiere, not every season or later streaming catalog. The Indian Express, 2019

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Established: Published accounts describe removed or shortened sexual and violent imagery, reframing, and softened subtitle wording on Indian television.
  • Not established: A complete list of cuts across episodes, a consistent edit shared by all seasons and channels, or a current comparison of streaming catalogs.
  • Best reading of the “better than you think” case: Sharma’s account recognizes losses while arguing that the main political narrative remained gripping. That is an individual assessment, not a measured audience consensus.

Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s book series, as India Today noted in its 2017 season-seven coverage. The books are the source text; they do not document the edits made for Indian broadcasts.
