The cast of M*A*S*H changed over its 1972–1983 run, and the actors’ paths after the finale were just as varied: some continued on screen, others turned to stage work, writing, activism or music, and several have since died. Here is where the best-known performers went after the 4077th.
How the M*A*S*H cast changed
M*A*S*H followed the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. Its original ensemble included Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville and Gary Burghoff. Rogers and Stevenson left before the end of the run; Mike Farrell and Harry Morgan joined in later seasons, while David Ogden Stiers arrived as Charles Emerson Winchester. Jamie Farr and William Christopher also grew into larger roles. The Television Academy’s overview details the series and its cast changes: Television Academy.

That turnover matters when looking at what happened afterward: there was no single cast career to follow, but a group of performers who took different routes beyond the series.

Alan Alda — Hawkeye Pierce
Alda continued working in film and television after the series, including a later role on ER. He also remained connected to M*A*S*H through a post-series production role. His career after the show extended well beyond the character that made him most familiar to viewers.

Swit’s impact went beyond playing Margaret Houlihan. In 2018, Alda told The Hollywood Reporter that Swit’s prompting helped move the character away from the “Hot Lips” label and toward a fuller person. As the Associated Press reported in 2025, Alda said: “One of the things I liked, with Loretta’s prodding, was every time I had a chance to write for her character, we’d get away from the Hot Lips angle and find out more about who Margaret was. She became more of a real person.”
That collaboration is part of the show’s longer legacy: its performers helped develop characters who could carry serious subjects, including sexism, alongside comedy. Swit’s final scripted speech as Margaret to the nurses was: “It’s been an honor and privilege to have worked with you. And I’m very, very proud to have known you.” The Associated Press attributes the speech’s writing to Swit.

The cast returned to the subject of the series in several reunions and retrospectives. FOX’s 2024 special, M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television, featured new interviews with Alan Alda, Gary Burghoff, William Christopher, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Wayne Rogers and Loretta Swit. The interviews used in the special were recorded in 2014, a decade before its broadcast. FOX’s announcement lists the special and its participants: FOX.
The series finale aired in February 1983. The Associated Press reported that more than 100 million viewers watched it, a figure that helps explain why the cast’s lives after the 4077th remain a point of interest. A broad career-by-career retrospective is also available at MASH4077TV.
