Family recollections describe a production based in Umbergaon, Gujarat, working so close to broadcast deadlines that casting could happen shortly before an actor’s first appearance. Its ending was also a deliberate adaptation choice: the main run concluded with Ram’s return and coronation, rather than continuing through Sita’s later trial and the Luv-Kush chapters.
How did Ramanand Sagar make Ramayan?
The show’s development started well before its broadcast. In a 2017 Hindustan Times retrospective, Ramanand Sagar’s son Prem Sagar said his father began conceptualizing the project in 1975. The idea faced delays at Doordarshan before it moved forward.
Prem Sagar recalled that in January 1987, Doordarshan’s Delhi offices asked for a pilot within two weeks. Four episodes had already been filmed, he said, and were cut and assembled into a single pilot. The first episode aired on January 25, 1987, according to both the retrospective and the Sagar Pictures series page.
A compressed production schedule
Filming took place in Umbergaon, Gujarat. Prem Sagar described little breathing room between production and transmission: actors could be selected close to the time their episodes were due to air. He cited Sugriva’s casting as an example, recalling that the actor was chosen only about a week before appearing.

In a July 31, 2026 interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ramanand Sagar’s grandson Shiv Sagar described the production technology as pre-digital. He said the team used linear editing machines and low-band U-matic video, without computers for visual effects or blue and green screens. Those details are his retrospective account of the production.
Shiv Sagar also recalled that 30,000 to 40,000 people gathered outside the studio daily. That is his recollection, not an independently verified attendance count.

Where was the original Ramayan TV series filmed?
The series was filmed in Umbergaon, Gujarat, according to Prem Sagar’s account in the Hindustan Times retrospective. The location was the production base for a show whose filming and broadcast schedules, by his description, ran unusually close together.
How many episodes were in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan?
The original serial comprised 78 episodes. Sagar Pictures identifies the narrative as 78 episodes, and a scholarly source gives the Doordarshan run as January 25, 1987 to July 31, 1988, in a Sunday 9:30 a.m. slot: Reading the Ramayana.

Why did the televised story end with Ram’s coronation?
Hindustan Times reports that Sagar based his version on Tulsidas’ Ramayana and ended the main serial with Ram’s return and coronation. The televised run did not include the later episode of Sita’s trial or the Luv-Kush chapters. Prem Sagar recalled that his father’s response to the omitted Sita episode was, “Mere Ram aisa nai kar sakte” (“My Ram could not do that”).

A 2017 Hindustan Times article quotes scholar Arvind Rajagopal giving a figure of 14 million television households in India in 1987. That is a household figure, not a count of individual viewers; Rajagopal’s account also notes that people watched together at shared viewing points. The available evidence does not establish a single independently verified total audience for the original run.

Accounts of the serial’s cultural and political significance differ. Hindustan Times presents contrasting views of Doordarshan’s secular role and the show’s relationship to later political change. The scholarly discussion in Reading the Ramayana likewise describes a contested history and says Ramanand Sagar’s own political agenda is unclear. The serial’s popularity is part of that history, but these sources do not establish it as the cause of later political events.
What happened to the series after its original run?
The 2020 Doordarshan rebroadcast, beginning March 28 during the COVID-19 lockdown, brought the serial back to a national television audience, according to New India Samachar. A later interview with Shiv Sagar also described a family documentary in development, built around interviews with cast members, technicians and relatives, plus archival photographs and footage. At the time of the July 2026 interview, the digital release route was only a possibility and the platform undecided; the interview did not confirm a subsequent release.
