TheWrap reported on March 6, 2025, citing Variety’s confirmation from CW sources, that the clip was a fan-made compilation of scenes from the scrapped project.
Is the leaked Powerpuff Girls trailer real?
The distinction is between the footage and the video’s packaging. According to TheWrap’s March 6, 2025 report, CW sources confirmed that the circulating footage came from the scrapped project. But an official pilot trailer was never assembled: the online video appears to be a fan-made collection of scenes, not a promotional trailer released by The CW.
So it is fair to call it a leaked-footage compilation or a fan-made video built from pilot footage. Calling it an “official leaked trailer” would overstate what the reporting establishes.
What does the video show?
TheWrap’s account of the compilation describes scenes including Bubbles intoxicated and Buttercup objecting to her costume. Those moments are details from a short edited video, not a reliable synopsis of the pilot or proof of what a finished series would have been like.

The reporting confirms footage from the scrapped project, but does not establish who first assembled or uploaded the video, the exact route by which it became public, or whether every shot came from the same cut. Forbes’s contemporaneous commentary likewise said its author was unsure how the video surfaced and whether it reflected the original pilot or another version. That is the writer’s stated uncertainty, not an independently verified account of the footage’s provenance.
What happened to The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls?
The CW developed the live-action adaptation in 2020. A pilot was filmed in 2021, but it did not make the network’s 2021–22 schedule. In May 2021, TVLine reported that the project was being reworked for possible later consideration, with the cast and writers still attached at that point.

The original pilot starred Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, and Donald Faison as Professor Utonium. Then-CW chairman Mark Pedowitz told TVLine of the first pilot, “Tonally, it might have felt a little too campy.”
That comment describes the tone of the first attempt; it does not establish the sole reason the project ultimately ended. TheWrap reported that the project had been scrapped by 2023, following Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW. The available reporting does not show that the circulating edit explains the cancellation.
