The details come from LaBeouf’s interviews and recollections by his co-stars and director—not an independent production record. Logan Lerman’s account also clarifies that a dentist removed LaBeouf’s tooth.
What did LaBeouf say he did to prepare?
In a 2014 interview with Dazed, LaBeouf described a mix of military immersion and personal choices. He said he joined the US National Guard the day after he got the role, spent a month living on a forward operating base, went to Fort Irwin with the cast and assisted an Army chaplain.
He also said: “I pulled my tooth out, knifed my face up and spent days watching horses die.” On bathing, he stated: “I didn’t bathe for four months.” Those durations and actions are his interview account, not independently verified measurements or an official record of service.
Did he remove his own tooth and cut his face?
LaBeouf’s phrasing about pulling out his tooth can sound as if he removed it himself. In a contemporary Guardian report, co-star Logan Lerman said LaBeouf went to a dentist to have it removed.

What did LaBeouf’s co-stars and director add?
Logan Lerman’s account of the tank
Lerman said LaBeouf stayed in the tank turret for every shot, even when someone else could have occupied it. That describes LaBeouf’s presence in the turret, not proof that he operated the tank throughout every scene.

David Ayer’s account of field preparation
Director David Ayer independently described LaBeouf embedding with a National Guard unit during a field exercise and shadowing an Army chaplain to learn how to minister to soldiers and preach scripture. In an interview with The Playlist, Ayer put those stories alongside the work of preparing for the film, saying: “The crazy Shia stories are really fun, but at the end of the day, it’s just that hard prep work that you see on the screen. The guy’s brilliant as an actor.”
Ayer also addressed the public stories about LaBeouf’s preparation in an Esquire interview, distinguishing them from LaBeouf’s work on set. The accounts support describing an unusually immersive approach, but not treating every reported detail as independently proven.

How did the rest of the cast prepare?
LaBeouf described the cast’s boot camp as psychologically demanding rather than simply physical. The actors repeated tasks beyond the point when they expected to be finished, he said, so they had to depend on one another. Ayer separately described fight training as a way for the ensemble to build bonds and learn about one another.
That collective preparation matters to the story: the film’s military atmosphere was not presented solely as the result of LaBeouf’s individual choices. In a Guardian interview, LaBeouf described his view of the film this way: “It’s really about intimacy among men.”

Why did LaBeouf choose such an immersive approach?
LaBeouf told the Guardian that he lacked confidence in his acting and changed his life so he would not have to pretend. That is his explanation for his approach, not a settled psychological diagnosis. Ayer, by contrast, emphasized the hard preparation and praised LaBeouf’s acting.
Together, their comments point to two distinct perspectives: LaBeouf framed the immersion as a way to get closer to the experience he was portraying; Ayer framed what reached the screen as the product of preparation and performance. The reported actions are striking, but they do not by themselves establish how every choice affected the finished film.
