The Paris Review Interviews, Volume 2 is a 16-interview anthology bringing together writers’ reflections on their work and literary lives. The interviews first appeared between 1953 and 2006; Orhan Pamuk wrote the introduction. It is the second volume in a four-volume selection from the magazine—not a writing manual, but a chance to hear a varied group of literary figures speak in their own words.

Who is interviewed in Volume 2?

The volume contains interviews with 16 writers and literary figures. Google Books lists these original interview years:

Interviewee Original interview year
Graham Greene 1953
James Thurber 1955
William Faulkner 1956
Robert Lowell 1961
Isaac Bashevis Singer 1968
Eudora Welty 1972
John Gardner 1979
Gabriel García Márquez 1981
Philip Larkin 1982
James Baldwin 1984
William Gaddis 1987
Harold Bloom 1991
Toni Morrison 1993
Alice Munro 1994
Peter Carey 2006
Stephen King 2006

The dates mark when the interviews originally appeared, not a single period in which they were all conducted. That span gives the collection a broad view of different careers, genres, and literary generations.

What kind of book is it?

This is a selected anthology of The Paris Review interviews, with an introduction by novelist Orhan Pamuk. Its central appeal is the writers’ own accounts of creative practice, literary careers, and ideas about writing. Readers may find useful perspectives or points of discussion, but the interviews are individual conversations rather than a systematic, step-by-step guide to writing.

Macmillan’s description includes a classroom endorsement from novelist and professor Colum McCann, so the book may also suit teaching or group discussion. That endorsement is not evidence of a guaranteed learning outcome.

Which edition should you identify?

Bibliographic listings differ on page count. Use the ISBN to distinguish the copy you mean rather than treating the page total as identical across every listing.

Listing Publisher or imprint ISBN Format and listed details

UK edition Canongate 9781847670335 Paperback; 528 pages; published 1 November 2007, according to Canongate.
Paris Review store listing Picador Not shown in the retrieved page details Paperback identified as a 2007 edition; listed at 512 pages.

For the US Picador edition, Macmillan provides the ISBN and publication details. The UK Canongate listing identifies its edition in the same way. The Paris Review store listing gives the alternate page count. These are bibliographic records; they do not establish current price, stock, or shipping availability.

How to approach the collection

Because the interviews span more than five decades and move among novelists, poets, critics, and other literary figures, readers can follow the volume in order or choose conversations by writer. The collection is especially suited to readers who want to compare how different people describe the work behind a literary career, rather than look for one uniform method.
