“Bliss” is strongest when Oz and Sofia turn a tentative partnership into a suspenseful business arrangement: their shared drug plan advances each character’s ambition without making either one trustworthy. The episode’s parallel story about Victor considering a life beyond Gotham is less sharply drawn. That imbalance leaves the hour’s crime-family maneuvering with more force than its quieter question about whether Victor will leave.

Episode 3 puts an uneasy partnership at the center
“Bliss” is season 1, episode 3 of The Penguin, which aired in the United States on October 6, 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing. The series stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar. HBO describes the show as a crime drama about Oz pursuing power and control in Gotham, and as the next chapter in The Batman saga.
This episode gives Oz and Sofia a practical reason to cooperate: they move toward distributing a new drug operation, and Oz names the drug Bliss. Their plan involves seeking distribution through his contacts in Chinese organized crime. That is a useful source of tension because cooperation here is not reconciliation. Each character can gain from the arrangement while continuing to calculate what the other might cost them.
#1 Best Overall
Oz and Sofia make business feel like a test of leverage
The partnership is the hour’s most compelling engine. Oz is trying to establish himself amid Gotham’s disrupted power structure; Sofia has her own stake in the family’s maneuvering and in Bliss’s apparent power. The A.V. Club’s recap describes her investment in both sides of the drug: what it can do and what it can mean for the family’s position.
Distribution gives the alliance a concrete objective, but not a stable foundation. Oz’s contacts are part of his value to Sofia, while the plan also gives him an opening to shape a business that could strengthen his standing. The episode’s suspense comes less from the prospect of these two trusting each other than from watching them find ways to be useful without surrendering control.
Rank #2
Farrell and Milioti are the central performers, and the material asks their scenes to carry that double meaning: persuasion on the surface, leverage underneath. The arrangement feels interesting precisely because neither character’s cooperation settles the question of who is using whom.
Victor’s possible departure has less emotional clarity
Victor’s potential escape with Graciela offers a smaller, more personal counterpoint to the drug deal. While Oz and Sofia are looking for a route into greater power, Victor has the possibility of leaving Gotham. The contrast is promising: one storyline measures opportunity in territory and influence, the other in whether a person can choose a different life.

But the episode does not make Victor’s final choice land with the same clarity as the alliance plot. The A.V. Club questions whether his motivation fully comes into focus, and Den of Geek likewise treats the Victor material as a weaker counterpoint to Oz and Sofia’s developing alliance. Those are critical assessments, not settled facts about the character. As a reading of the episode, though, they identify a real imbalance: the strategic thread gives its characters clear immediate objectives, while Victor’s decision is harder to connect to a fully articulated inner conflict.
The Batman connection serves the crime story
HBO frames The Penguin as part of the crime saga begun by Matt Reeves’ The Batman, while centering the series on Oz’s struggle for control in Gotham. In “Bliss,” the larger comic-book setting is most useful as the backdrop for a crime story: power vacuums, family interests, criminal contacts, and the practical work of building influence. Viewers unfamiliar with the film can treat it as optional context; HBO’s framing establishes continuity, not a prerequisite for understanding this episode.
Rank #4
- Blu-ray Movies, Blu-ray TV Shows
That grounded approach suits the episode’s best material. The drug operation matters not as an abstract escalation but as a transaction that could alter the balance between two characters who have reasons to remain wary. The episode is less assured when it shifts to Victor, where the personal stakes do not feel as fully developed as the machinery of Oz and Sofia’s plan.

“Bliss” moves Oz’s climb forward by giving him and Sofia a consequential reason to work together without disguising their separate ambitions. The partnership supplies the episode with its sharpest tension and its clearest dramatic direction. Victor’s possible departure adds a worthwhile human contrast, but the episode leaves his choice less fully motivated, making that thread feel secondary rather than equally consequential.

For viewers following the season’s Gotham power struggle, this is an effective episode built around an alliance that may be useful, temporary, or both. Its most intriguing question is not whether Oz and Sofia can cooperate, but how long cooperation can last when every advantage is also a chance to gain leverage.
