The February 2024 Borderlands trailer prompted a lively argument over whether the film looked like the games—or like a generic action-comedy wearing their costumes. The fun is in that clash: fans were specific, funny, and far from unanimous. It is a comic take on a handful of online threads, not proof that commenters enjoyed themselves more than every moviegoer enjoyed the film.
What the trailer promised
Lionsgate Movies published the official Borderlands trailer on February 21, 2024. Its description introduces Lilith, played by Cate Blanchett, returning to Pandora and teaming up with Roland, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Tannis, and Claptrap for a mission tied to Atlas and his missing daughter. The trailer sells colorful mayhem, treasure hunting, and irreverent comedy as the ingredients of a film based on the game franchise. Watch the official trailer.
That premise also helps explain why the comments got so granular. This was not presented as a scene-for-scene retelling of one game. Rotten Tomatoes’ background article describes the story as original and its cast of characters as drawn from across the series. That gives the adaptation room to invent, but it also invites fans to measure each character and joke against a long-running source world. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page provides the background and release information.
Why commenters saw a mismatch
The broad movie crowd worried about a generic adaptation
In the r/movies trailer thread, some commenters questioned whether the cast and trailer captured the games’ characters and tone. One argued that a missing element could have made the preview “feel less generic and more like Borderlands.” Another predicted reviews would say the cast did what it could with a below-par script. Those remarks are illustrative posts by individual users, not a consensus or a forecast with special authority.

Fans focused on the comedy and characterization
The r/Borderlands thread made the disagreement more franchise-specific. One commenter objected that the trailer’s comedy felt “more slapstick than raunchy/dark humor.” Another said, “None of the characters feel true to the games except possibly Claptrap.” The debate was not simply whether the film looked polished; it was whether its version of Pandora felt recognizably like the series fans knew.
The comments were not all negative
The fan thread also included people who liked the aesthetic, planned to approach the film with an open mind, or were cautiously optimistic. That matters: the thread’s entertainment comes partly from the collision of certainty and restraint. Some users were ready to reject the adaptation from its first preview; others treated a trailer as too little evidence for a final verdict.

The same distinction applies to later discussion. In a July 26, 2024 report, PC Gamer collected negative reactions to the film’s final trailer from YouTube and Reddit. It offers another snapshot of online dunking before release, not a systematic survey of viewers. PC Gamer’s report on the final trailer reactions shows how the argument continued as release approached.
How the joke compares with the movie’s reception
The title’s “way more fun” is a punchline about the spectacle of the discussion, not a measured audience-comparison result. Reddit threads are selected conversations in particular communities; a ratings page aggregates a different kind of response. They cannot establish what all fans thought, how much anyone enjoyed the comments, or whether the commenters represent moviegoers generally.

There is, however, later context for the film itself. Rotten Tomatoes listed Borderlands as a 2024 PG-13 science-fiction/action/adventure/comedy directed by Eli Roth, with a U.S. theatrical release on August 9, 2024, and streaming release on August 30, 2024. On October 8, 2026, the page showed a 10% Tomatometer from 167 reviews and a 48% Popcornmeter from 500+ verified ratings. Those are changeable page figures, not a study of trailer reactions or comment quality.

At the time of a 2026 check, Lionsgate Movies’ official trailer page showed 18,784,235 views and 80,000 likes. Those are volatile YouTube page counts for a trailer published in 2024; they do not reveal how viewers felt, and they are not a measure of the comments’ entertainment value. Likewise, Rotten Tomatoes’ listed scores describe the film’s reception on that page at the date checked, not the opinions expressed in two Reddit threads.

Put together carefully, the evidence supports a modest, sharper point: the trailer gave two online communities plenty to argue about, especially over casting, humor, and fidelity to the games. That debate can be funny to read precisely because it is specific—and because it includes both hard skepticism and a few people willing to wait and see.
