It is best approached as a dramatic interpretation of the Passion narrative—not as a documentary or a neutral reconstruction of every historical detail.
What is The Passion of the Christ about?
The film follows Jesus after the Last Supper, beginning with his prayer in the Garden of Olives and continuing through betrayal, arrest, accusations, trial and condemnation. 20th Century Studios describes the story as covering the final twelve hours of Jesus’ life. The film was released on February 25, 2004.
Who made the film?
Mel Gibson directed and co-wrote the film with Benedict Fitzgerald. The studio credits Gibson, Bruce Davey and Stephen McEveety as producers. The principal cast includes James Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern, Monica Bellucci and Sergio Rubini.
What languages are spoken?
The film uses Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew, with subtitles. PBS reported that the U.S. release included English subtitles. The language choices are part of the film’s period and religious presentation, but they have also been a point of historical criticism.

How historically accurate is it?
There is no useful single yes-or-no verdict: the film is a dramatization, and historical claims can be assessed individually. In a March 2004 commentary for the Archaeological Institute of America, archaeologists Andrea Berlin and Jodi Magness examined its representation of Roman Palestine through evidence such as papyri, inscriptions, graffiti and historical texts.
Language and administration
Berlin and Magness explain that Aramaic was commonly spoken among Jewish and Samaritan populations in Roman Palestine, while Greek was used for official administration. Roman officials could have spoken Latin among themselves, but the archaeologists argue that Greek would better fit communication with local elites. They also question aspects of the film’s clothing, including its depiction of clothing during crucifixion. These are specific scholarly criticisms, not proof that every scene or element is inaccurate.

Drama and historical reconstruction
The film’s screenplay and production choices should be distinguished from the Gospel accounts and from a historical reconstruction. PBS’s 2004 coverage described public discussion of historical accuracy, the portrayal of Jewish characters and Pontius Pilate, and responsibility for Jesus’ death. That record documents the debate; it does not resolve religious or theological questions.
Why was the film controversial?
Before the film’s release, critics raised concerns that its portrayal of Jewish characters and the events surrounding Jesus’ death could encourage collective blame of Jews and reinforce antisemitism. The Los Angeles Times reported on those concerns and Gibson’s response. He rejected a blame-centered interpretation, saying, “This is not the blame game,” and framed the film as a story of sacrifice. Those positions belong to the speakers in a documented public debate; they should not be collapsed into a claim that all viewers or critics interpreted the film in the same way.

How long is it, and how graphic is the violence?
20th Century Studios lists a runtime of 2 hours 7 minutes (127 minutes) and an R rating. The Numbers gives graphic violence as the reason for the rating. The film’s severe violence is a central viewing consideration, particularly for viewers sensitive to explicit depictions of physical suffering.
When was it released, and what are its reported box-office figures?
20th Century Studios gives February 25, 2004 as the release date. The Numbers records the original wide domestic release on that date and also lists a Fathom Entertainment wide rerelease on September 10, 2026. A database listing does not establish whether a screening is available in a particular location.
| Figure | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $83,848,082 | Opening weekend | The Numbers, 2004. |
| $371,864,658 | Domestic gross | The Numbers title record. |
| $251,530,705 | International gross | The Numbers title record. |
| $623,395,363 | Worldwide cumulative total | The Numbers figure shown October 8, 2026; cumulative database totals can change with rereleases and updates. |
| $25 million | Production financing | The Los Angeles Times reported in 2004 that Gibson financed the film himself for this amount. |
Where can you watch or find it on DVD?
20th Century Studios labels the film page “NOW ON DIGITAL” and provides a shop link. That establishes an official digital pointer, but does not confirm subscription-streaming availability, price or availability in every country. Texas A&M University Libraries catalogs a widescreen DVD edition published by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in 2004, with a 126-minute runtime and R rating. The studio’s 127-minute listing and the catalog’s 126-minute entry differ slightly; the records alone do not establish a meaningful cut difference.
