BGR reported in September 2024 that it was streaming on Max then; the available sources do not confirm whether it is still there in October 2026, so check Max’s current catalogue in your region.
What is the documentary about?
Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron follows Miyazaki during production of The Boy and the Heron. BGR’s September 9, 2024 article described the documentary as having been made with access to Studio Ghibli over seven years. That seven-year figure is BGR’s report, not an independently verified production record. Read BGR’s report.

Where can you watch it?
BGR reported that the documentary was available on Max when its article was published on September 9, 2024. That is a historical listing, not confirmation of availability today. Check Max’s catalogue for your country before subscribing or planning a watch.
There is an important distinction between the documentary and the feature film: Warner Bros. Discovery announced that The Boy and the Heron would begin streaming on Max in the United States on September 6, 2024. That announcement concerns the feature film, not the documentary’s streaming rights. WBD’s announcement about the U.S. Studio Ghibli film catalogue describes an agreement for the films; it does not establish where the documentary is available. WBD’s September 2024 programming announcement gives the feature film’s U.S. premiere date.

How it relates to The Boy and the Heron
The documentary’s focus is the creative process behind Miyazaki’s feature, rather than simply another way to watch the animated film. The two titles also have separate availability histories: the 2024 Max announcement for The Boy and the Heron should not be read as proof that Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron is currently included in Max’s catalogue.
