Major spoilers for Jinshi’s later family reveal. Jinshi is biologically the son of Ah-Duo and the man who becomes the current Emperor. At birth, Ah-Duo arranged an exchange between her newborn and the Emperor’s newborn son with Anshi. As a result, Jinshi was raised and presented as the Emperor’s younger brother, while Anshi’s son became the Imperial Brother.
What Season 1 tells viewers
Season 1 leaves Jinshi’s imperial identity unresolved. As Kayti Burt explains in TIME’s April 2, 2025 Season 1 explainer, the story implies that Jinshi might be the son of the former Emperor and Anshi, which would make him the current Emperor’s younger brother. That is the apparent account at this point in the anime—not the complete later reveal.
The season also draws attention to a resemblance between Jinshi and Ah-Duo. Resemblance alone does not establish their relationship; it becomes meaningful in light of the later account of the newborn exchange.
Later spoiler: the complete family reveal
The later explanation separates Jinshi’s biological family from the identity under which he was raised. Crunchyroll’s character guide describes Ah-Duo as having a son with the Emperor and arranging an exchange of the newborns.

So the apparent contradiction is resolved by asking which kind of relationship is meant. Jinshi is the Emperor’s son by birth, but he occupies the social and political role of the Emperor’s younger brother. The Imperial Brother is the Emperor’s biological son with Anshi.
How the two accounts fit together
The Season 1 implication and the later family explanation answer different questions at different points in the story. In Season 1, Jinshi’s identity is still presented as a mystery, and the former-Emperor-and-Anshi possibility is an unresolved implication. The later exchange account explains why the identity Jinshi appears to have does not match his biological parentage.

The official Japanese Season 2 character page lists Jinshi, the Emperor, Anshi and Ah-Duo among the adaptation’s characters, but its accessible text does not set out their family tree. The specific exchange explanation above is described in Crunchyroll’s character guide; TIME’s article is useful for distinguishing what Season 1 had revealed from what came later.
Why Jinshi’s family tree is easy to misread
- His public role is not his biological parentage. He is treated as the Emperor’s younger brother despite being the Emperor’s son.
- The anime withholds the full explanation in Season 1. Its apparent parentage implication should not be mistaken for the later account.
- The exchange involves two newborns. Jinshi and the Imperial Brother are the children whose biological and public identities diverge.
