Season 2, Episode 14 of The Apothecary Diaries—Episode 38 overall—is “The Dancing Ghost” (踊る幽霊, Odoru Yūrei). In the episode, Consort Lishu reports a ghost at Kongou Palace’s bathhouse, and Jinshi asks Maomao to investigate. The Japanese listing gives the air date as April 11, 2025.
What happens in “The Dancing Ghost”?
Xiaolan and Maomao visit a bathhouse, where Lishu tells Maomao that a ghost has appeared in the baths at Kongou Palace. Lishu describes a curtain moving in a closed room beside the dressing room and a smiling white face. Maomao initially advises Lishu to speak with Jinshi; later, Jinshi asks Maomao to look into the report.
The distributor’s synopsis also indicates that the investigation brings to light problems Lishu faces at Kongou Palace. It does not establish the ghost’s exact explanation or the full sequence of events, so a more detailed account of the mystery’s resolution would go beyond what is confirmed here.
Review: why the ghost story matters
The supernatural framing gives the episode a reason to bring Maomao into Lishu’s orbit, but the setup points toward more than a puzzle about a strange sight. Lishu’s fear and the difficulties she faces at the palace become part of the investigation, making her circumstances relevant alongside the reported apparition.

That reading is grounded in the episode synopsis, not a claim about how every scene plays. The available episode-specific information does not establish enough to assess its animation, pacing, or performances in detail. Anime Rants reviewer separately rated the episode 8/10 and emphasized Lishu’s vulnerability; that is one critic’s opinion, not an aggregate score.
How the episode fits the source material
Episode metadata maps the adaptation in part to light novel Volume 4, Chapters 3–5. That makes Volume 4 the relevant source book if you want to compare the adaptation with the novel, but it is a full volume containing material beyond this episode. The mapping is a reference listing rather than an official production confirmation. The same metadata includes partial manga-chapter mappings, which are likewise secondary.
